ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan women's tennis head coach Ronni Bernstein announced the signing of a pair of five-star recruits in Julia Fliegner (Clarkston, Mich.) and Sophia Fornaris (Miami, Fla.) to National Letters of Intent on Thursday (Nov. 12).
"I am excited to welcome Julia and Sophia to our program," Bernstein said. "They both will bring so much to our team both on and off the court. They both are fierce competitors and they work very hard. I think that combination goes a long way in college tennis and look for them both to contribute so much to our team once they arrive on campus."
Fliegner is the No. 31-ranked senior in the class by Tennis Recruiting. As a freshman in 2018, she won the No. 1 singles state title and helped Detroit Country Day to the Division 3 state title. Fliegner holds a 4.0 grade-point average as Summa Cum Laude at Country Day.
She was the 2019 Midwest Closed Champion, while taking the silver ball at the Indoor 18s tournament in November 2019. She is ranked top-five in the USTA rankings and is an ITF Grade 4 doubles champion.
Fornaris is ranked No. 35 in the class by Tennis Recruiting. At Gulliver Prep, she helped the Raiders to the 2019 FHSAA Division 2 state title, while individually winning the district and regional titles that season. Fornaris finished runner-up in the individual state tournament in 2018 after winning regional and district titles. She is a two-time Miami Herald all-county first-team honoree and holds a 4.0 GPA while participating in National Honor Society.
She was the recipient of the 2020 USTA Florida Albert Carrington Balink Player of the Year award and was ranked No. 1 in Florida Section G18s, G16s and G14s. Fornaris was the 2019 champion at the G18s USTA Florida Bobby Curtis Jr. State Tennis Championship, while winning titles at the 2019 USTA G18s L2 doubles and L3 singles events.
