MADISON, Wis. -- The No. 22-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team claimed four bouts and just missed in several other swing matches, including three one-point losses, in a 20-12 loss at No. 12 Wisconsin in its Big Ten Conference dual finale on Sunday afternoon (Feb. 16) at the UW Field House.
Junior/sophomore Jack Medley, ranked 19th nationally at 125 pounds, opened the dual with an 8-3 decision against Eric Barnett, scoring on a takedown in each period and accumulating 1:05 in riding-time advantage. Medley finished on a single leg in the final 15 seconds of the first period and added similar scores midway through the second and third.
The Wolverines lost one-point decisions in back-to-back matches at 141 and 149 pounds. Freshman Cole Mattin was the aggressor in a 5-4 loss to seventh-ranked Tristan Moran in the former bout with takedowns in the first and third periods. He evened the score with a single leg in the third and rode off riding time before kicking Moran loose prior to the Badger wrestler taking a lengthy injury timeout. Mattin forced a scramble in the waning seconds and was close to a takedown at the buzzer; Michigan challenged the no-call, but it was reviewed and upheld.
Graduate student Ben Lamantia sacrificed an initial -- and late -- lead in a 9-8 tiebreaker loss to Cole Martin at 149 pounds. A third-period stall call on Michigan evened the score before Lamantia countered a Martin shot to score a takedown in the final 10 seconds -- but Martin secured a reversal with just two seconds remaining. Wisconsin earned a rideout in the tiebreaker to seal the win.
Sophomore/freshman Will Lewan, ranked ninth at 157 pounds, scored two takedowns -- single legs in the first and third periods -- en route to a 5-3 decision against Garrett Model for his second win of the weekend.
Junior Reece Hughes evened the score late but ultimately fell to fourth-ranked Evan Wick, 9-5, at 165 pounds. Wick built an early lead with two single legs in the first, but Hughes scored on one of his own near the edge with 30 seconds remaining in the third. Still trailing on riding time, Hughes cut him loose before giving up a counter takedown that iced the win for the Badger.
Sophomore/freshman Max Maylor, a native of Highland, Wisconsin, sacrificed an early lead in a 4-3 loss to Tyler Dow at 174 pounds. After scoring on slide by in the opening 10 seconds, Maylor gave up a counter takedown late in the first period and, after trading escapes in the second and third, could not overcome the one-point deficit.
With the dual already clinched, the Wolverines closed it out with decision wins at 197 pounds and heavyweight. Fifth-year senior Jackson Striggow earned a 7-3 decision over Taylor Watkins, rallying from an initial deficit with takedowns in the second and third periods. He iced it with a counter takedown in the third and rode out the bout to accumulate 1:16 in riding-time advantage.
Sophomore heavyweight Mason Parris, ranked second nationally, remained unbeaten on the season with a 3-1 decision against fifth-ranked Trent Hillger. After an early scramble produced no points, Parris scored the deciding takedown out of another in the waning seconds of the first. He was close to scoring in several more flurries in the second and third periods but didn't earn the call. He improved to 25-0 on the season. It was his 10th win over a ranked opponent and second over a top-five opponent in three matches.
The Wolverines will return to the road to close out the dual-meet portion of their 2019-20 slate next Friday (Feb. 21), heading to Edinboro, Pennsylvania, to face Edinboro at 7 p.m. McComb Field House.
