ITHACA, N.Y. -- The No. 13-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team won its sixth straight match, 4-1, on Saturday (Feb. 8) and handed Cornell its first loss of the season at the Reis Tennis Center.
The Wolverines took the doubles point with matching 6-4 wins at No. 1 and No. 2. The No. 4-ranked pair of Andrew Fenty and Mattias Siimar stayed unbeaten at No. 1 doubles at 7-0 this spring and have won their last 11 matches dating back to the fall season.
No. 42-ranked Connor Johnston and Ondrej Styler improved to 7-1 this spring at No. 2 doubles, while Nick Beaty and Patrick Maloney left No. 3 doubles unfinished after the doubles point was won.
Fenty, ranked No. 48 in singles, won his third straight at No. 1 defeating Eero Vasa in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. At No. 3, No. 43-ranked Styler claimed a two-set win over Lez Kazakov, 7-5, 6-4 for this third consecutive win.
Siimar and Beaty, both of whom are unbeaten this spring at 7-0, had matches left unfinished at Nos. 2 and 4, respectively.
Johnston rebounded with a straight-set win over Pietro Rimondini 6-3, 7-5 at No. 5.
Playing in his first singles match of the spring season, No. 96-ranked Patrick Maloney fell to Daniel Soyfer, 6-1, 7-5.
The Wolverines will look to keep their win streak going when they take on their second top-10 team this season in No. 9 Columbia. The match will be held at Life Time Athletic in West Harrison, New York, at 3 p.m.
