ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Freshman Franz Wagner scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for his first career double-double, but a late Ohio State run proved too much for the University of Michigan men's basketball team to overcome as it fell, 77-63, in a Big Ten road test Sunday (March 1) at Value City Arena.
Senior Zavier Simpson was the only other double-digit point scorer for the Wolverines with 12 on the day, while adding seven assists and five rebounds.
Junior Eli Brooks added seven points and seven rebounds, while Jon Teske scored eight points.
The Wolverines outscored Ohio State, 34-18, in the paint and scored 15 points off of OSU miscues.
The teams exchanged baskets early before Michigan put OSU on a scoring drought of more than three minutes and used a 7-0 run to take an 18-15 lead with a little over eight minutes remaining in the first half.
The Buckeyes responded with a 10-0 run and took a 25-18 advantage heading into the final five minutes of the first half.
In a half that was beset by scoring droughts, the U-M defense held OSU scoreless for more than three minutes to work itself within three, 32-29, to close out the first half.
Livers, Simpson and Teske all contributed six points with Simpson pulling down three rebounds and adding three assists, while Brooks had six rebounds in the first 20 minutes.
The Michgian offense came out of the locker room with a little fire, going on a 9-0 run capped off with a Wagner putback and forcing OSU to call a timeout to slow the U-M momentum with 17:32 remaining.
The Buckeyes went on a 12-2 run over the first six minutes of the second half to take a six-point advantage, 46-40.
Wagner came out of the under 12-minute media timeout and dropped back-to-back three-pointers to pull the Wolverines within two, 54-52, with just under eight minutes remaining in the contest. However, a late run by the Buckeyes gave them the first double-digit lead of the contest and sealed the victory.
The Wolverines will close out the 2019-20 regular season Thursday (March 5) when they host Nebraska at Crisler Center. Opening tip is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., and the game will be broadcast live on FS1.
