COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The No. 25-ranked University of Michigan men's basketball team fell to No. 9 Maryland, 83-70, in its final regular-season game Sunday afternoon (March 8) at the Xfinity Center.
Sophomore David DeJulius scored a career-high 20 points with three three-pointers and went 5-for-5 from the free-throw line, while Franz Wagner scored 15 and Zavier Simpson added 13 points, all in the second half, and a team-best seven rebounds and six assists.
The Wolverines were 16-for-19 from the charity stripe and made six three-pointers. U-M also added 26 points in the paint and 16 points off of Terrapin turnovers, while shooting 48.0 percent from the floor.
The teams exchanged baskets to start the contest before Maryland hit four of its five field goals heading into the under-eight minute media timeout to take a 23-15 advantage over the Wolverines. U-M continued to struggle to keep pace falling behind by 10, 33-23, with just over two minutes remaining in the half.
Following three free throws from DeJulius, a last-second basket by Maryland put the Terrapins ahead, 41-28, heading into the halftime break. DeJulius paced the U-M offense with 13 points, while Michigan shot 50 percent (11-for-22) from the floor in the first 20 minutes.
The Wolverines came out with fire in the first nine minutes of the second half as Simpson scored a quick seven points and Wagner took the ball coast-to-coast for an and-one play followed by a triple to take Michigan into the media timeout trailing, 56-49.
U-M scored on five straight trips down the floor and used two free throws from Isaiah Livers with just over 10 minutes remaining in the game to pull within three of the Terrapins, 56-53.
A Maryland run following a Michigan scoring drought put the Terrapins up by 10 points once again, 72-62, with just over four minutes left. Neither team could find the bounce it needed, going more than three minutes without a basket before Michigan head coach Juwan Howard called a timeout with two minutes remaining on the clock.
Michigan could not make a late push, and with the Wolverines fouling down the stretch, the Terrapins sealed the game at the free-throw line.
U-M finished the regular season 19-12 overall with a 10-10 mark in the Big Ten standings. The Wolverines are the No. 9 seed in the Big Ten Tournament and will play No. 8 seed Rutgers on Thursday (March 12) at noon at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana.
