SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Freshman Pier Francesco De Col of the University of Michigan men's golf team earned a top-15 finish Sunday (March 8) in his first start at the Wolverines' Desert Mountain Intercollegiate, played at the Outlaw Course. U-M logged an eighth-place team finish (293-310-297/900) in the annual event.
Amidst blustery conditions on a notoriously difficult course, Michigan was one of just three teams to finish the first two rounds on Saturday as the second round was suspended due to darkness. Michigan checked in with its best scoring line of the tournament with a 293 in the opening round. When the second round concluded Sunday, U-M's score of 310 put the Wolverines in a tie for seventh place heading into the final round. The team recovered nicely on Sunday with a 297 to close out the event.
De Col was steady throughout the tournament as the native of Torino, Italy, ranked among the tournament's top 10 in birdies with 11.
Brent Ito (71-81-74/226) came out hot and led U-M with a first-round 71 before falling back to the field in a 32nd-place finish. He was consistent on the par 4s, ranking 11th in the field in scoring with a 4.03 average, matching De Col.
Patrick Sullivan (74-76-75/225) edged Ito for second place among Wolverine golfers while placing 27th overall. He ranked ninth in the field on the long par-5 holes with a 4.75 average.
On the par 3s, it was Charlie Pilon leading the way for U-M with a 3.17 scoring average, good for 17th best among the field.
