ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Detroit Red Wings star Dylan Larkin, who scored 15 goals and tallied 47 points in his only season at the University of Michigan, decided to take in Saturday night's (March 7) Big Ten Tournament game between his alma mater and rival Michigan State.
During the third period of the Wolverines' 3-0 win to clinch the best-of-three series, the "Children of Yost" student cheering section became aware that Larkin was in Yost Ice Arena. One of the members of the fanatical group wrote on a grease board: "Dylan, Come Sit With Us."
The plea was shown on the video scoreboard, and before long, there was Larkin down near the ice with the "Children of Yost," mugging for countless selfies with the fans and having them lunge into position behind him for a group photo.
It was electric and a great example of what makes Yost special. Larkin trumpets his belief in the home fans on a video shown at every game, noting that it was one of the reasons he chose Michigan.
Wolverine coach Mel Pearson thanked Larkin for choosing Yost as his entertainment destination on an off night with the Red Wings, smiled, placed tongue firmly in cheek, and said, "Dylan's got three years of eligibility left, and so we're going to see if he can come back."
Larkin gave up that eligibility by signing with Detroit after making All-America second team and All-Big Ten first team as a freshman in 2014-15, when he roomed in the South Quad with current Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman and fellow first-round pick Zach Werenski.
Larkin, who could've played at Michigan as late as 2017-18, the year it went to the Frozen Four even without him, is now the alternate captain of the Red Wings. Still only 23 years old, he is leading Detroit in goals (19), assists (34) and points (53).
And he scored big again with his college fans Saturday, even on an off night from lacing up the skates.
Ahhh just like old times! ??@ChildrenOfYost @umichhockey great to be back visiting the best building and THE BEST FANS in college hockey! #GOBLUE https://t.co/FufrNf7TY6
