NEW YORK, N.Y. -- University of Michigan senior linebacker Josh Uche heard his name called by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell late in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft on Friday (April 24), earning the 60th selection by the New England Patriots. Uche joins his former Michigan teammate Chase Winovich as a member of the Patriots defense.
Uche is the fifth-highest drafted defensive player chosen during Jim Harbaugh's tenure at Michigan, coming off the board behind first-round picks Jabrill Peppers, Taco Charlton, Devin Bush and Rashan Gary.
Uche spent much of the past two seasons chasing down opposing quarterbacks and creating havoc in the backfield. He led the defense in sacks twice, racking up 15.5 during the 2018 (7.0 sacks) and 2019 (8.5) seasons. Uche played in 40 career games for the Wolverines, recording 56 tackles, 20.5 tackles for loss, 16.5 sacks, one fumble record and two pass breakups.
In 2019, Uche was voted by his teammates as the Defensive Player of the Year after earning All-Big Ten second team honors from the coaches and third-team accolades from the media. He started nine games during the season, contributing 11.5 TFLs, 8.5 sacks, 35 tackles and two PBUs. Uche finished 35th in the NCAA in sacks during the 2019 season after listing 56th nationally in 2018. He earned All-Big Ten honorable mention after registering 8.0 TFLs, 7.0 sacks and 15 tackles during the 2018 season.
The 2020 NFL Draft concludes with rounds four through seven on Saturday (April 25). Television coverage will start at noon on ABC, ESPN and NFL Network.
