ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan men's swimming and diving head coach Mike Bottom announced Monday (May 4) the additions of swimmers Juan Ceresa (Austin, Texas) and Charlie Morici (Valecia, California) to the team's crop of incoming freshmen for the 2020-21 season.
"These two men are joining what I believe will be a historic class," said Bottom. "Juan has a beautiful stroke and a strong kick behind him, while Charlie has improved very rapidly since refocusing on swimming. They've gotten better in a very short amount of time, and we expect that growth to continue once they arrive on campus."
Juan Ceresa | Freestyle | Austin, Texas (LB Johnson/Longhorn Aquatics)
Ceresa, the son of former Wolverine swimmer Robert Ceresa (1987-88), is primarily a mid-distance freestyler. In February, he won the 500-yard freestyle (4:27.21) at the UIL Texas 5A State Championships and was runner-up in the 200-yard freestyle (1:38.25). Two weeks later at the Speedo Champions Series in College Station, Ceresa took seventh in both the 200- and 400-meter freestyles, and eighth in the 500-yard freestyle. Since 2018, he's improved his career-best times by wide margins, cutting 16 seconds in the 500-yard freestyle and more than five seconds in the 200-yard freestyle.

He set career bests in both events at the Speedo Champions Series in Carlsbad in February, finishing third in the 200-yard butterfly and fourth in the 100-yard butterfly. Like Ceresa, Morici has lowered his career-best times substantially since 2018, taking more than 22 seconds off in the 200-yard butterfly and more than four seconds off in the 100-yard butterfly.
