NORTHBROOK, Ill. -- Allstate and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) named University of Michigan football senior linebacker Adam Shibley to the 2020 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, it was announced on Wednesday (Sept. 23). The Allstate AFCA Good Works Team honors dedicated and hard-working student-athletes for their off-the-field achievements and selfless contributions to their communities.
Shibley is among 22 student-athletes and one honorary coach for the 2020 team. The Cleveland, Ohio, native was chosen among a list of 149 nominees and as selected by the award committee's panel of judges. Shibley is the lone Big Ten student-athlete on the list. He is the third Wolverine to be named to the Good Works Team since its 1992 inception, joining Zoltan Mesko (2009) and Patrick Omameh (2012).
Shibley is a communications and media major in Michigan's College of Literature, Science and the Arts. He is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree (2018-19). Shibley has appeared in 12 games in his career, contributing mainly on special teams. He was Special Teams Player of the Game against Iowa (Oct. 5) last season and was co-recipient of the Team's Scout Team Player of the Year Award on defense as a sophomore.
In late 2018, Shibley founded The Uniform Funding Foundation (TUFF), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that works to decrease participation costs for youth sports teams and athletes who come from low-income areas by providing customized gear, uniforms and equipment. Beyond providing uniforms, TUFF provides mentorship and motivation for young men and women in low-income areas through 'TUFF Talks' and involvement from its notable list of supporters. Shibley is also active as a member of the Big Ten Anti-Racism and Anti-Hate Coalition, formed this past summer.
To date, TUFF has provided uniforms for nine youth programs and 17 high schools. Nine current NFL players, including six former Wolverines, have participated by Adopting a Team, a form of sponsorship within the organization. Notable football media such as Adam Schefter, Gus Johnson, and Braylon Edwards also are TUFF supporters, as well as former MLB slugger Prince Fielder. In addition to those forms of sponsorship, TUFF has raised more than $110,000.
