LINCOLN, Neb. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team fell in straight sets (25-14, 25-15, 25-13) at No. 12 Nebraska on Friday (Oct. 1) night in Devaney Center.
The loss drops the Wolverines to 1-2 in Big Ten play, while the Huskers improve to 3-0.
Junior May Pertofsky led the Wolverines with eight kills, and senior Paige Jones added seven. Sophomore Jess Mruzik finished with six kills, seven digs, an ace and a block. Junior Jess Robinson had five kills and hit .364 in the match.
Nebraska controlled play through the first set, hitting .514 compared to Michigan's .206 and cruising to a 25-14 victory. Pertofsky was a bright spot for the offense, finishing with four kills on nine swings without an error.
The second set saw the Huskers continue their strong play, out-hitting the Wolverines .419 to .212. Michigan fell behind early but clawed their way back to a six-point deficit at 20-14 thanks to a 5-0 run. Ultimately, Nebraska finished the set on a 4-0 run to bring the score to its final of 25-15.
Set three followed the same script as the first two, with Nebraska jumping ahead to an early lead and never looking back. Michigan had the score within five near the midway point, but could not overcome the Huskers' consistent attack as the home team closed out the match with a 25-13 final.
Sophomore setter Scottee Johnson finished with 22 assists and redshirt sophomore libero Hannah Grant led the Wolverines with 10 digs. Freshman Maddi Cuchran made her collegiate debut and picked up a pair of digs.
Michigan looks to even its Big Ten record Saturday (Oct. 2) against Iowa at 7 p.m. CDT. The match, originally scheduled to be played in Xtream Arena, will now be played in Carver-Hawkeye Arena and will be streamed live on B1G+.
