ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan wrestling team announced Friday (Oct. 1) its schedule for the 2021-22 season -- the 100th year in the history of the program -- with 13 regular-season dual meets and a pair of first-semester tournaments. In addition to its five regular-season home contests, the Wolverines will co-host the 2022 NCAA Championships on March 17-19 at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit. U-M has placed top five in each of the last three NCAA tournaments.
"We are thrilled to get back to a full schedule in 2021-22, celebrate the 100-year anniversary of our program, and host the NCAA Championships next March," said head coach Sean Bormet. "It's an exciting year for Michigan wrestling, and we have an exciting and experienced lineup to match it. The enthusiasm and support for our program and Team 100 is at an all-time high."
The Wolverines will wrestle six teams that finished in the top 15 at the NCAA Championships a season ago, including Penn State, Arizona State, Minnesota and Ohio State -- all top-10 NCAA finishers in 2021.
U-M will open its dual-meet schedule against CSU Bakersfield on Sunday, Nov. 14, in Ann Arbor and face non-conference road duals at Columbia (Nov. 19), Buffalo (Nov. 21) and Arizona State (Jan. 3) before rounding out the non-conference schedule and the dual-meet slate at Central Michigan on Feb. 20. The Wolverines also resume their annual appearances at the kickoff MSU Open (Nov. 6) and Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational (Dec. 3-4). It will be U-M's 39th appearance at the CKLV event.
The Wolverines will travel to rival Ohio State for their Big Ten Conference opener on Friday, Jan. 14, in Columbus, Ohio, before hosting Penn State (Jan. 21), Rutgers (Jan. 23), Minnesota (Jan. 28) and Michigan State (Feb. 13). Michigan's other road Big Ten duals include Maryland (Jan. 30), Nebraska (Feb. 4) and Indiana (Feb. 11).
Nebraska will host the 2021 Big Ten Championships, March 5-6, at Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln, Neb., before the season wraps up with the NCAA Championships two weeks later (March 17-19) at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit.
Michigan hosts the NCAA tournament for the third time in program history. The Wolverines previously welcomed the 1934 event to campus at the Intramural Building before serving as co-host in 2007 at the Palace of Auburn Hills. U-M placed seventh and sixth, respectively, in its previous turns as host.
"With the depth of talent returning this season, I believe the 2022 NCAA Championships could be the most exciting national tournament in the history of our sport," said Bormet, "and I couldn't be more excited to have it in our backyard in Detroit. Wrestling fans are going to absolutely love Little Caesars Arena and The District Detroit area, and it's a tremendous opportunity for our university and our state to host this event."
