
Michigan Falls in Straight Sets at No. 7 Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Michigan volleyball team was turned aside by No. 7 Ohio State on Sunday (Oct. 10) in front of a record-setting crowd of 4,098 in the Covelli Center, falling in straight sets (22-25, 17-25, 15-25) to the Buckeyes.
Sophomore Jess Mruzik was the only Wolverine to reach double-digits in kills on the afternoon, finishing with 11. She also added a service ace and had six digs. Fellow sophomore Scottee Johnson had 22 assists and tied for the team-lead with nine digs.
Michigan was its own worst enemy in the opening set, committing five service errors and ultimately falling 25-22. The Buckeyes led by five, 16-11, and the Wolverines battled back to even the score at 16-16. The two battled back-and-forth the rest of the way, with OSU pulling ahead late. The Wolverines hit just .200 while the Buckeyes hit .270.
Set two started in the Wolverines' favor, jumping out to an early lead, but the Buckeyes battled back and used a 10-1 run to go from a 13-10 U-M advantage to a 20-14 OSU lead. Michigan never recovered from the swing in momentum, and Ohio State pulled out a 25-16 set victory.
The third set saw Ohio State jump ahead early and Michigan never able to recover. U-M cut the deficit to four at 15-11, but the Buckeyes responded with another long run, outscoring the Wolverines 10-2 to close the match with a 25-13 set victory.
Overall, the Wolverines hit just .128 compared to the Buckeyes' .319. Michigan was also on the short end of blocks (7-3), digs (50-38) and committed more than twice as many service errors (9-4).
Michigan returns home next weekend for a pair of matches, hosting Maryland on Friday (Oct. 15) at 6 p.m. inside Cliff Keen Arena before facing Wisconsin on Saturday (Oct. 16) at Crisler Center at 4:30 p.m.
