ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Despite a strong effort, the University of Michigan volleyball team fell in straight sets (23-25, 15-25, 24-26) against No. 3-ranked Wisconsin on Saturday evening (Oct. 16) in Crisler Center.
Sophomore Jess Mruzik led the Wolverines in kills and digs, finishing with 10 and eight, respectively. U-M received major contributions on the front line from the dynamic junior duo of May Pertofsky and Jess Robinson, who each finished with six total blocks. Pertofsky added three service aces and Robinson tallied seven kills.
The two teams treated a Crisler Center crowd of 2,178 to a back-and-forth battle to start the afternoon, registering 12 ties and three lead changes. Michigan never trailed by more than three in the set, but could not pull the lead out when it mattered most, falling 25-23.
Wisconsin took control in the second set, leading from the first point and never looking back. The Badgers hit .393 and held the Wolverines to -.032 to cruise to a 25-15 win.
Set three saw the Maize and Blue regain its form, even getting to the doorstep of set point at 24-22. Wisconsin proved its No. 3 national ranking, rattling off four straight points to end the match with a 26-24 victory.
Michigan finished the match with nearly twice as many blocks as Wisconsin (11-6), and had more service aces than the Badgers (6-3). However, the Wolverines hit just .111 for the match compared to Wisconsin's .302 and held a sideout percentage of .554 to the Badgers' .672.
U-M will hit the road for a rare midweek matchup when the Wolverines take on Indiana in Bloomington on Wednesday (Oct. 20) at 7 p.m. The match will be streamed live on B1G+.
