DEXTER, Mich. -- Select runners from the national No. 15-ranked University of Michigan cross country team closed out the regular-season portion of the schedule Friday afternoon (Oct. 22) at the Eastern Michigan Fall Classic at Hudson Mills Metropark.
Derrick Simmons was the individual victor to lead the way for the Wolverines in the five-kilometer (3.11-mile) race that was their last ahead of the Big Ten Cross Country Championships next Friday (Oct. 29) at Penn State.
Simmons covered the course in 15:00.6, nearly a full minute faster than his finish at the season-opening Michigan Open a month and a half ago at this same venue, and edged out unattached Michigan State runner Patrick Byrnes by 0.2 seconds.
He was one of seven top-10 finishers for the Wolverines, who claimed the team title with 19 points to Michigan State's 44.
Fifth-place Cole Johnson, sixth-place Michael Hancock, seventh-place Joe Meyers and eighth-place John Florence all finished within three seconds of one another between 15:11 and 15:14 to round out the scoring for the Wolverines.
Now that the regular season has come to a close, Michigan will turn all its attention to the Big Ten Championships on Oct. 29 in State College, Pa.
