WILMINGTON, N.C. -- With three Wolverines finishing among the top-25 individually, the 15th-ranked University of Michigan women's golf team posted an 861 (-3) 54-hole total Sunday (Oct. 31) and closed as the runner-up at the Landfall Tradition held at the Country Club of Landfall.
In its eighth trip to the Landfall, the Maize and Blue posted its best-ever finish as the runner-up and fourth top-five. After opening the fall with an 851 (-1) total at the Wolverine Invitational and a team title, Michigan nearly repeated that effort its second sub-par total of the season.
"It was really a fabulous week for our team, and a total group effort," said U-M head coach Jan Dowling. "The team responded to adversity so well all week. We finished poorly on day one, and they responded with a nine-under-par team round on day two. And, in today's final round we got off to a rough start, and they responded with grit and patience to finish strong and place second. We wanted to win, but overall it was a great team performance."
Using an opening 70 (-2) from sophomore Mikaela Schulz and an even-par 72 from senior Sophia Trombetta, U-M began the Landfall with a 289 (+1) and positioned itself atop the 18-team field. In Saturday's (Oct. 30) second round, Schulz fired a career-best 67 (-5), while U-M added a career-best-tying 68 (-4) from senior Ashley Lau, and got a 70 (-2) from junior Hailey Borja to stay atop the leaderboard after 36-holes following a 279 (-9) team total.
Playing in the final group for the fourth straight event, U-M's slow start dropped it out of the lead. However, a back-nine rally of 10 birdies over the starting five's final seven holes helped the Wolverines post a 293 and earn the runner-up finish, just behind sixth-ranked South Carolina (849, -15).
Schulz's 214 (-2) tally helped her tie for 10th and post the best finish by a Wolverine at the Landfall. She helped U-M see three Wolverines close among the top 25, as well as all five starters finishing in the top 30.
Lau posted her third top-20 individual finish of the fall as she tied for 19th with a 219 (74-68-75) total, while Borja's 218 (75-70-73) gave her a share of 23rd. Rounding out the starting five, sophomore Monet Chun tied for 27th at 219 (73-74-72), and Trombetta tied for 30th at 220 (72-75-73).
With the fall slate completed, the Wolverines shift their focus to their midseason training program. The next time the Maize and Blue will see competition will be during a January training trip against Florida Gulf Coast on Monday, Jan,. 17. The first team competition of the spring is set for February, when U-M competes in Tulane's Allstate Sugar Bowl event, Feb. 13-15, in New Orleans, La., at the English Turn Golf Club.
