STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team saw its Big Ten Tournament run come to a close as it fell 2-0 to No. 1-seeded Penn State on Wednesday afternoon (Nov. 10) in a semifinal match at Jeffrey Field.
No. 24-ranked Penn State (12-6-1) scored both of its goals in the first half, while the Wolverines' best opportunities came in the second half. Uriel Zeitz had three straight shots early on in the final 45 minutes of action.
Sophomore Bryce Blevins also had a good chance that was just barely swatted out of the way in the second half. Zeitz finished the afternoon with seven shots with three on goal, while Kevin Buca had four shots.
The Nittany Lions capitalized on a set piece just outside the 18-yard box, taking an early 1-0 lead in the 12th minute.
Michigan (8-7-3) had back-to-back shots from Buca and Umar Farouk Osman, but Buca's was blocked and Osman's sailed just wide. Penn State quickly tacked on another to go up 2-0 in the 24th minute.
Zeitz came out of the halftime break with three straight shots, including one off the post as he looked to bring U-M within one of the Nittany Lions in the 49th minute. In the 74th minute, Blevins looked to get Michigan on the board with a shot that was pushed away by the leaping Penn State keeper to keep the Wolverines scoreless.
Despite a consistent attack, U-M was unable to sneak a shot past Penn State.
Michigan will wait to find out its postseason fate on Monday (Nov. 15) at 1 p.m. during the 2021 NCAA Selection Show at NCAA.com.
