BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The No. 4-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team claimed the first nine bouts, scoring bonus points in three, to roll to a 31-3 win at Buffalo on Sunday afternoon (Nov. 21) at Alumni Arena. The Wolverines have won nine matches in each of their three duals this season and earned a sweep of their weekend road trip to the Empire State with today's victory.
Senior/junior Jack Medley, ranked 21st in the latest InterMat poll, opened up the dual with an 8-2 decision over Tristan Daugherty at 125 pounds. He scored a takedown in each period -- fireman's dumps in the first and second and a head in the hole in the third -- and accumulated 3:14 in riding-time advantage.
Sophomore/freshman Dylan Ragusin, ranked 16th, claimed the dual's marquee match decisively with a 14-4 major decision against 20th-ranked Derek Spann at 133 pounds. Ragusin finished on six total takedowns, including three in the second period, and accumulated 3:41 in time advantage. Ragusin has earned bonus points in all three dual appearances.
Junior/sophomore Cole Mattin made his season dual debut and scored a 3-1 overtime decision against former teammate Ben Freeman at 141 pounds. After trading little more than escapes in regulation, the wrestlers fended deep attacks in sudden victory before Mattin finished on a double leg with just 11 seconds remaining in the extra period.
Michigan earned three straight decisions from its veterans at the middleweights. Graduate student Kanen Storr, ranked 18th, used an escape and second-period rideout to secure a 2-0 win against Josh Arceri at 149 pounds. Senior/junior Will Lewan, ranked 15th at 157 pounds, beat Ty Raines, 4-3, after finishing out of a flurry with a double-leg takedown on the edge in the third period. Junior/sophomore Cameron Amine, ranked 11th at 165 pounds, also used a third-period takedown to defeat Noah Grover 3-2 on a low single attack in the final minute.
Senior/junior Max Maylor jumped out to an early and held on late for a 9-6 decision against Giuseppe Hoose at 174 pounds. Maylor scored on single legs early in all three periods, but Hoose used a counter takedown to fight back into the match and pull within one midway through the third. Maylor fended off another late attack in the waning seconds and finished with 3:20 time advantage.
Fifth-year senior Jelani Embree rolled to his third straight major decision with a 17-5 win over Jake Lanning at 184 pounds. He scored four takedowns, including a slick duck under and go behind in the second and tacked four back points off a leg turk in the second. Embree finished with 4:01 in riding time and improved to 3-0 on the season.
Graduate student Patrick Brucki, ranked 10th at 197 pounds, also earned his third straight bonus win with a 20-4 technical fall against Sam Mitchell. Brucki broke the match open early, scoring four points off a feet-to-back single leg and adding a two-point leg turk in the first period. He tacked five more takedowns in the second and third and earned a two-point turk at the final buzzer to secure the tech.
Buffalo got on the board with a 2-0 decision at heavyweight, where Toby Cahill used a second-period escape and third-period rideout to edge senior/junior Bobby Striggow, who bumped up from 197 pounds.
Michigan (3-0) will take a week off over the Thanksgiving holiday before returning to action at the annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, slated for Friday and Saturday, Dec. 3-4, at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nev. Action is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. PST each day.
