DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- The No. 12-ranked University of Michigan women's basketball team used an 11-2 run to open the fourth quarter to break a 40-40 tie after 30 minutes en route to a 61-52 win over No. 16-ranked Oregon State as part of the Daytona Beach Invitational on Friday evening (Nov. 26) at the Ocean Center.
Senior Leigha Brown hit a pair of free throws with 1.1 seconds remaining in the third quarter to knot the game at 40, setting up an eventful final 10 minutes.
Neither team scored for the first 2:30 of the final quarter until senior Naz Hillmon canned a pair at the line to break the 40-40 stalemate. Following an OSU timeout, Brown embarked on her own 5-0 run on a layup that just sneaked over the rim and a triple in transition as the Michigan lead swelled to seven with 5:30 remaining. Hillmon and Brown each converted a bucket each to cap the 11-2 spurt for a 51-42 advantage, forcing another OSU timeout with 4:37 remaining.
The Beavers countered with five straight points before senior Danielle Rauch canned a triple to stem the tide and keep Michigan's lead at seven with 3:32 to go. Oregon State countered again with a bucket, but junior Maddie Nolan hit a stepback triple from the right corner with 1:42 to go for a 57-49 Wolverine lead. Nolan split a pair of free throws and Brown converted a three-point play off the steal-and-score to put the game away for Michigan.
Hillmon recorded her third double-double of the season with 20 points, 13 rebounds and four steals in 36 minutes of action. Brown went for 14 points, all in the second half, with three boards and two steals, while Rauch chipped in 11 points and two steals. U-M forced 23 Oregon State turnovers, recording a season-high 12 steals in the contest.
After falling behind 4-0 quickly to start the game, Michigan ripped off an 8-0 run on six straight points from Hillmon and capped by a pair of Nolan free throws to grab an 8-4 lead at the 5:57 mark of the first quarter.
The Beavers answered with five consecutive points, only for Michigan to counter with a Rauch triple and a steal-and-score from junior Michelle Sidor to regain the lead moments later. The Wolverines grabbed a 17-12 lead after 10 minutes of action.
The second quarter featured 16 foul calls between the teams, putting both in the bonus midway through the frame. After Oregon State closed to within a point at 20-19, senior Emily Kiser grabbed the board off a missed free throw and was fouled. She hit the ensuing two free throws at the 4:44 mark, igniting an 11-4 run for the Wolverines to close the half.
Hillmon canned five straight free throws to stake Michigan a nine-point lead, 31-22, with 42 ticks left before the half for U-M's biggest lead of the contest to that point. OSU split a pair before the half, giving Michigan a 31-23 halftime advantage behind 14 points from Hillmon.
Rauch nailed a triple on the left wing to give Michigan its first double-figure lead of the game, 36-25, with 7:58 to go in the third. The Beavers answered with 11 straight points to tie the game at 36 with 4:10.
Brown hit a pair free throws following the media timeout with 3:55 remaining to nudge Michigan back in front by two, 38-36. Oregon State converted a left-wing triple to grab its first lead since the first quarter, 39-38, with 1:02 left before the end of the quarter.
