TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- The No. 9-ranked University of Michigan women's soccer team saw its season come to an end in a 1-0 overtime loss to No. 1-ranked and top-seeded Florida State in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament on Friday (Nov. 26) at FSU's Seminole Soccer Complex.
The Seminoles (19-1-2) scored with 55 seconds left in the first overtime session, ending the Wolverines' season. After nine minutes of overtime play and the match seemingly destined for a second overtime, FSU's Beata Olsson slotted home a ball in front of the goal and gave the Seminoles a 1-0 golden goal victory.
Michigan (18-3-3) wraps up a year where it captured its first Big Ten Tournament title in over 20 years, won its 300th match as a varsity program, and won at least 17 matches for the fifth time in program history. U-M's No. 2 national seed for the NCAA Tournament marked the second time the Wolverines have earned a top-two seed.
The Wolverines caught a break early in the match as a Florida State goal was disallowed on an offsides call in the 8th minute. Eight minutes later, another FSU goal was taken away due to video review following traffic in the box on a Seminole corner from the near side. Senior goalkeeper Hillary Beall made a sprawling stop after punching the initial ball off her own defender, then dove to her left to keep the entire ball from going over the goal line.
Michigan's best chance of the opening portion of the match came in the 19th minute, as senior Raleigh Loughman found space 25 yards out top center. She took a few touches and smashed a strike that went just left of the post.
The Wolverines' lone clean shot on goal in the opening 45 came in the 34th minute. Senior Nicki Hernandez found space on the left flank, and fired a shot straight into the arms of Florida State goalkeeper Cristinia Roque near post.
Coming out of the half, the tandem of senior Sarah Stratigakis and sophomore Sammi Woods linked up on the near touch side, with Stratigakis getting a ball through to junior Dani Wolfe just inside the 18. A flick shot with the side of her foot looked promising but was controlled by Roque.
Hernandez nearly gave the Wolverines the lead in the 66th minute, linking up with Stratigakis in transition. She took a touch that was turned away by a sprawling save, though it marked the best chance of the match at that point for either side.
Beall made the play of regulation in the 74th minute, as Florida State was awarded a penalty kick after a Seminole was taken down inside the box. FSU's Jaelin Howell stepped to the spot and shot a strike low and to the left that was stopped by a diving Beall, preserving the 0-0 scoreline.
Following a scoreless first 90 minutes, the match went to extra time, where U-M held a 2-1-3 record heading into the contest. Four minutes in, Hernandez took space on the left-wing, and was taken down on the top left portion of the 18 extended. Loughman sent in an inswinging service that kept pressure on the Seminole backline, but a chance did not come to fruition.
Michigan held Florida State, one of the top teams in the NCAA with an average of 8.00 points per match, to only two shots in the first half and only nine shots -- four on goal -- in the initial 90 minutes of play.
Beall ended the day with four saves while Loughman and Hernandez led U-M in shots with a pair apiece.
