Wolverine Bites
• Michigan returns four Wolverine All-Americans and 10 total NCAA qualifiers in 2021-22. Among the returners are Tokyo Olympians and graduate students Myles Amine (184 pounds) and Stevan Micic 141), who have combined for seven All-America honors over their collegiate careers, but will not appear in competition for the Maize and Blue until second semester. Junior/sophomore Cameron Amine (165) and senior Mason Parris (Hwt) both earned All-America honors last season for the first time in their careers.
• The Wolverines added another All-American in the offseason in graduate student transfer Patrick Brucki at 197 pounds. Brucki placed fourth at the 2019 NCAA Championships and was an NWCA first team All-American after the COVID-shortened 2020 season. He sat out 2020-21 season while recovering from double hip surgery and completing his bachelor's degree from Princeton. He owns an 81-16 record over his three collegiate seasons.
• Several returning Wolverine starters are slated to change weight classes this season. Myles Amine, who claimed three All-America finishes at 174 pounds before jumping up to 197 last season, will move down to 184 pounds for his final season. Stevan Micic, a three-time All-American at 133 pounds, bumps up to 141 this year after appearing at 57kg (125 pounds) at the Olympics. Sophomore/freshman Dylan Ragusin will move up a weight to 133 pounds, while graduate student Drew Mattin, who has qualified for NCAAs at both 125 and 141 pounds, comes back down to 133.
• The Wolverines will start the 2021-22 season with nine wrestlers ranked nationally at their respective weight classes, including five in the top 10 according to Flowrestling: No. 5 Stevan Micic (141), No. 8 Will Lewan (157), No. 2 Myles Amine (184), No. 2 Patrick Brucki (197) and No. 2 Mason Parris (Hwt).
• Myles Amine used a late takedown to rally past India's Deepak Punia, 4-2, and capture Olympic bronze at 86kg/189 pounds in Tokyo. He became the second Olympic medalist in Michigan wrestling history, joining Steve Fraser, who captured the 90kg/198-pound Greco-Roman gold medal in 1984. Amine and Stevan Micic (57kg freestyle, Serbia) were the seventh and eighth Olympians in program history. Amine, who served as one of two San Marino flag bearers during the Olympic Opening Ceremony, also became the country's first male Olympic individual medalist.
• Head coach Sean Bormet enters his fourth season at the helm of the Wolverine program. Under his guidance, the Wolverines have compiled a 25-8 dual-meet record, including an 18-6 mark in Big Ten duals, and has posted back-to-back fifth-place NCAA finishes in 2019 and 2021. Michigan has boasted eight different All-Americans over the last three seasons.
• The Wolverines also added a new face to their staff with assistant coach Kevin Jackson. Considered one of the greatest freestyle wrestlers in U.S. history, Jackson is an Olympic gold medalist and two-time world champion. He spent 15 total years with USA Wrestling's freestyle program in several coaching capacities, including eight as USAW national freestyle coach (2001-08) and, most recently, the last four as the national freestyle developmental coach (2017-21).
• Michigan will face six teams ranked in the NWCA preseason poll, most notably four top-10 teams in No. 2 Penn State, No. 8 Arizona State, No. 9 Nebraska and No. 10 Ohio State. Eleven of 14 Big Ten schools were either ranked or receiving votes to start the 2021-22 season. Michigan earned the No. 4 preseason ranking.
2021-22 Season in Review
Michigan posted a 5-1 dual-meet record over its shortened, conference-only slate last season and placed fourth at the Big Ten Championships and fifth at the NCAA Championships -- the program's third straight top-five NCAA finish. Myles Amine captured the 197-pound Big Ten title, while four Wolverines claimed All-America honors: Cameron Amine (165 pounds), Logan Massa (174), Myles Amine (197) and Mason Parris (Hwt).
