DETROIT, Mich. -- The No. 6-ranked University of Michigan men's basketball team earned a decisive 87-54 victory over Wayne State on Friday (Nov. 5) in its lone exhibition of the season at Wayne State Fieldhouse.
Michigan shot 52.5 percent (31-for-59) from the floor, while draining nine three-pointers and keeping the Warriors to 28.8 percent (23-for-80) shooting on the night. In all, 12 players scored for the Maize and Blue, with five reaching double-digits.
The Wolverines were led by Hunter Dickinson and Moussa Diabate with 14 points each, while Eli Brooks dropped four three-pointers for 12 points. DeVante' Jones and Caleb Houstan each added 10 points to round out the double-digit scoring.
On the boards, Dickinson grabbed a team-high nine rebounds, and Houstan, Diabate, and Brandon Johns Jr. all had five rebounds.
Brooks hit a triple off the opening tip before the Wolverines went on a 9-0 run to take an 11-6 lead on a Diabate layup with 14:25 left in the first half. An and-one play from Dickinson with just over five minutes to play in the first half put Michigan ahead by 11, 30-19.
Dickinson went on his own 7-0 run before Brooks fed Jones for a layup to extend the U-M lead to 34-19 and force Wayne State to take a timeout with 4:31 remaining in the opening half. Michigan closed out the first half on a 21-2 run to take a 48-21 lead into the halftime break.
The Wolverines shot 50 percent (16-for-32) in the first 20 minutes of action, including five three-pointers, while also limiting Wayne State to 20 percent shooting.
U-M grabbed 11 defensive rebounds and scored a quick 26 points, including two three-pointers from Brooks to take a 71-39 advantage over the Warriors.
A Diabate dunk off a feed from Jones put Michigan ahead 80-48 before the Wolverines added seven more points to run onto a 87-54 victory.
Michigan opens its 2021-22 campaign Wednesday (Nov. 10) when it hosts Buffalo at 6:30 p.m. inside Crisler Center. The game will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
