OTTAWA, Ontario -- Sophomores Owen Power and Kent Johnson of the University of Michigan ice hockey team have been invited to the Hockey Canada National Junior Team selection camp, it was announced Wednesday (Dec. 1).
The camp is set for Dec. 9-12 in Calgary, with the 2022 World Junior Ice Hockey Championship from Dec. 26-Jan. 5 in Edmonton and Red Deer, Alberta.
The pair is expected to miss the Great Lakes Invitational on Dec. 29-30, as well as the Ohio State series on Dec. 10-11.
Power was invited last season, but due to the extended period of time away from University with COVID regulations, he could not attend. He went on to be named to Canada's senior team, winning a gold medal. He had three assists in 10 games, and was named the Player of the Game in a match against the Russian Olympic Committee.
Johnson attended the Team Canada World Junior Camp and Summer Development Camp this past August.
This is the first time since 1996 that two Wolverines have been invited. Jason Botterill and Robb Gordon were both on the team in 1996, when they captured gold medals.
Seven Wolverines have competed for Canada in the World Juniors, with 11 medals coming back to Ann Arbor. They include: David Harlock (1991, gold); Jason Botterill (1994-96, gold); Robb Gordon (1996, gold); Mike Van Ryn (1998-99, silver); Mike Cammalleri (2001, bronze; 2002, silver); Jeff Tambellini (2004, silver); and Andrew Cogliano (2006-07, gold).
