LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Sophomore/freshman Dylan Ragusin captured the 133-pound crown to headline the No. 4-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team's third-place finish (94.5 points) at the 39th annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, which concluded Saturday (Dec. 4) at the Las Vegas Convention Center. The Wolverines had six total placewinners and drew scoring performances from eight representatives.
Ragusin, the No. 3 seed and 16th-ranked nationally, used a big four-point sequence in the third period to ice a 9-5 decision over Northwestern's sixth-ranked Chris Cannon in a wild championship bout. Ragusin trailed initially after an early first-period NU takedown but secured a reversal and a rideout -- and did it again in the second. He took a 5-4 lead with his escape point in the third then broke it open in the final 40 seconds, shooting in on a single leg and putting Cannon in neutral danger to earn the takedown and two back points. It was Ragusin's first collegiate match against Cannon, but he avenged a loss in their last meeting in the semifinals at the U23 Freestyle World Team Trials in May. U-M has boasted six CKLV champions over the last five tournaments.
Ragusin captured his first CKLV crown in his debut at the annual tournament. He went 4-0 over the weekend, improving to 11-2 on the season, and earned a pair of wins over ranked opponents. He also defeated Utah Valley's Haiden Drury, ranked 29th by InterMat, 4-3 in the morning semifinals. He opened up with two takedowns in the first period before being hit with a caution point and a second-period rideout narrowed the score.
Five other Wolverines earned top-six finishes. Fifth-year senior Jack Medley (125 pounds), junior/sophomore Cole Mattin (141) and senior/junior Will Lewan (157) all dropped their consolation semifinal matches to place fourth at their respective weights -- the first CKLV placement for each in their second appearance at the event. Junior/sophomore Cameron Amine used an overtime pin to claim fifth at 165 pounds, while graduate student Patrick Brucki defaulted to sixth after a narrow semifinal loss at 197 pounds.
Medley, ranked 16th nationally, narrowly fell to Princeton's top-seeded and second-ranked Pat Glory, 4-2, in the semifinals. Glory scored first out of a first-period scramble, but Medley pulled within one point with a single leg late in the second. The Wolverine started down in the third -- an escape would have evened the score on the board -- but was ridden out and bumped to the consolation bracket. He picked up an 8-3 decision over Cal Poly's Antonio Lorenzo with four points off a fireman's dump in the first before falling 7-2 to Oregon State's Brandon Kaylor in the third-place bout.
Mattin posted a 6-2 record and went from unseeded to fourth place at 141 pounds. He earned three wrestleback wins over ranked opponents in the morning session, including a second-period fall against Purdue's 15th-ranked Parker Filius in the consolation semifinals off a suck back at the 3:21 mark. He fell to Nebraska's 11th-ranked Chad Red, 6-1, in the third-place match.
Lewan, ranked 15th at 157 pounds, bounced back from his quarterfinal loss with three straight wrestleback wins, including a dominant 14-5 major decision over Stanford's Charles Darracott to start the day. Lewan scored six takedowns in the bout, including three in the first period, and rode for 2:50. He fell to Wyoming's 13th-ranked Jacob Wright, 3-2, in the consolation final on a third-place single leg.
Amine, ranked 10th ranked 165 pounds, picked up his second overtime win over Harvard's 12th-ranked Philip Congliaro of the weekend in his fifth-place bout, shooting in deep on a single leg, taking it high and coming down with a cradle to pin the Crimson wrestler at the 7:29 mark. Amine dropped his earlier two bouts of the morning, narrowly falling to Cal Poly's top-seeded Evan Wick, 4-1, in the semifinals on a second-period takedown before dropping a wild 9-6 decision to Cornell's Julian Ramirez in the consolation semifinal.
Brucki, ranked eighth at 197 pounds, fell in the semifinals, 2-1, to Wyoming's ninth-ranked Stephen Buchanan -- the eventual champion -- after a first-period injury timeout gave Buchanan choice and an extra escape. The Wolverine captain withdrew from the tournament after the match, defaulting to sixth place.
The Wolverines have a month off until their next official competition when they travel to Austin, Texas, to face Arizona State on Monday, Jan. 3. The dual is slated for a 7 p.m. CST start at the JW Marriott Austin and will be streamed live on Flowrestling.
