MOBILE, Ala. -- Posting a career-low tie for 21st paced by a career-best 215 (-1), junior Patrick Sullivan guided the University of Michigan men's golf team to 907 54-hole team tally and 15th place finish at the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate at the Magnolia Grove Crossings on Tuesday (Feb. 16). The Wolverines played in their first event in nearly a year after the COVID-19 pandemic shortened the 2019-20 season and postponed the fall portion of this season.
In his first career start in the No. 1 position, Sullivan played like it, leading the Wolverines throughout the three-day event. After opening with rounds of 75 and 73, he found himself tied for 47th. In the final round, Sullivan posted four birdies and an eagle to card a career-low 67 (-5) -- his first career sub-70 round, and bettering his prior best of 70 (-2) carded in the final round of the 2019 Desert Mountain Intercollegiate (March 9-10).
With the second lowest individual tally of the final round, Sullivan's 67 helped him to his first sub-par 54-hole tournament total with a 215 (-1), which vaulted him 26 positions to tie for 21st -- his first career top-25 individual finish. In the end, he bested his prior best 54-hole event total by six shots -- 221 at the 2018 Fighting Irish Classic (Oct. 7-8).
Making their Michigan debuts, freshmen Will Anderson (T-72nd; 229) and Jack O'Donnell (T-80th; 235) were two of the starting five, while fellow rookie Jude Kim played as an individual and finished 86th (257). Senior Charlie Pilon (83rd; 236) and junior Ben Dunne (85th; 240) rounded out U-M's starters.
The Wolverines will not wait long before taking to the course. They head to Laredo, Texas, for Houston's Border Olympics next Monday and Tuesday (Feb. 22-23) to be played at the "Max" Golf Course. The 54-hole event will begin with 36 holes Monday and a final 18 on Tuesday.
