INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The University of Michigan wrestling program's eight NCAA Championships qualifiers earned their seeds for the 2021 NCAA Championships, notably graduate student Myles Amine, who earned the No. 1 seed at 197 pounds, when the NCAA released its full tournament brackets Wednesday evening (March 10).
Amine is the first Wolverine to enter the NCAA tournament with a No. 1 seed since two-time NCAA 141-pound champion Kellen Russell in 2012. Amine owns a perfect 6-0 record on the season and has defeated ranked opponents in each of his last five matches, including decision wins against Iowa's then-No. 3 Jacob Warner and Nebraska's then-No. 1 Eric Schultz en route to the Big Ten 197-pound title last weekend. Amine is a three-time NCAA All-American at 174 pounds. He will face the winner of the pigtail between Tennessee Chattanooga's Logan Andrew and Rutgers' Billy Janzer the first round.
Junior Mason Parris earned the No. 2 seed at heavyweight for the second consecutive year. Now a three-time NCAA qualifier, Parris enters the NCAA Championships with an 8-1 record after taking second place at the Big Ten Championships. Parris leads the Wolverines with four falls this season and has earned bonus points in all eight of his wins. He will face Binghamton's Joe Doyle in the first round.
Sixth-year senior Logan Massa, a 2017 NCAA All-American, is the No. 5 seed at 174 pounds after placing fourth at the Big Ten Championships. He is 8-3 on the season, with five bonus wins, and will wrestle American's Tim Fitzpatrick in the first round.
Three Wolverines earned No. 11 seeds -- freshman Dylan Ragusin (125 pounds), fifth-year senior Kanen Storr (149) and sophomore/freshman Cameron Amine (165). Storr is now a three-time NCAA qualifier, is 7-4 on the season after a fifth-place Big Ten finish and will face Lehigh's Jimmy Hoffman in the first round. Ragusin and Amine will both make their NCAA debuts next weekend; Ragusin is 7-3 after placing seventh at Big Tens and will open against South Dakota State's Daniel Vegas, while Amine owns a 9-2 mark after claiming third place at Big Tens and will wrestle North Carolina's Kennedy Monday in the first round.
Junior/sophomore Will Lewan claimed the No. 14 seed at 157 pounds and enters the weekend with a 7-2 record. He placed eighth at the Big Ten Championships after medically forfeiting out of his final two matches. He will wrestle Hofstra's Holder Heller in the first round. Senior/junior Drew Mattin rounds out the Wolverine qualifiers as the No. 25 seed at 141 pounds. Mattin, a three-time NCAA qualifier, is 4-6 on the season and placed eighth at the Big Ten Championships. He'll open against Nebraska's Chad Red.
The NCAA Championships are scheduled for Thursday through Saturday, March 18-20, at Enterprise Center in St. Louis, Mo.
