
Jones Joins 1,000-Kill Club in Setback Against No. 9 Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The University of Michigan volleyball team fell to No. 9-ranked Ohio State by a 3-1 score (25-22, 24-26, 25-16, 25-23) on Friday (March 19) inside Covelli Center. Junior Paige Jones joined an exclusive group, as her 10 kills gave her 1,000 for her career.
Freshman Jess Mruzik (15) and sophomores May Pertofsky (14) and Jess Robinson (12) all surpassed the 10-kill plateau.
In the opening set, Michigan (4-4, 4-4 Big Ten) led in the early portion by as many as three points, but Ohio State (14-1, 14-1 Big Ten) crawled back and tied the score at 12 and later at 19. OSU the went on a 6-3 run to close out the set.
U-M evened the match in the second set, taking the stanza, 26-24. Michigan led, 23-21, late in the set, but the Buckeyes clawed back to even things at 23 and then 24 before U-M closed the set with consecutive points for the set win, its first over a ranked opponent this year.
Ohio State shot out to a 7-1 lead in the third set, and the closest U-M came was 13-9 following a kill from Jones. The Buckeyes took the set win, 25-16.
In the fourth and decisive set, OSU held a 9-5 lead before a Mruzik kill tied it at 12. Michigan then led by two (15-13) and later, 21-20, but the two sides drew even at 22. Jones' 1,000th knotted the score at 23, but OSU went on to win the final two points to capture the match win.
Freshman Scottee Johnson led the Wolverines with 45 assists and added a career-high 22 digs, while classmate Hannah Grant also had a personal best in digs with 23. U-M hit .165 on the night to the Buckeyes' .200. Ohio State also totaled 11 service aces to four for the Wolverines.
