ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team won its seventh straight match, shutting out Illinois, 4-0, on Saturday afternoon (March 6) at the Varsity Tennis Center. Michigan won both completed doubles matches and did not drop a set on the singles court in the win.
Michigan got the early jump on Illinois, winning the doubles point behind victories at No. 3 and No. 1.
At No. 3, freshman Kari Miller and sophomore Nicole Hammond combined for a 6-4 win. The match featured four straight breaks of serve to start before both teams held to knot the match at 3-3. U-M got the break it needed at 5-4, and Hammond held serve in the ensuing game to seal the Wolverine victory.
With Michigan on the brink of the doubles point, it was a race to finish at both No. 1 and No. 2. U-M's No. 2 duo of sophomore Andrea Cerdan and senior Alyvia Jones battled back from a 4-1 deficit to take a 5-4 lead with Jones serving.
It was Michigan's top duo of freshman Jaedan Brown and graduate student Chiara Lommer who finished first, grabbing a 7-5 win at the top spot. The U-M pair broke early and kept the advantage until an Illinois lob shot tied the match at 4-4. Neither team held serve over the next three games until Brown held in the 12th game for a Michigan win, as her serve down the middle set Lommer up at the net for the easy volley winner.
Michigan took all six first sets from the Illini in singles action.
Lommer was first off court for the Maize and Blue, dropping just three total games in a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 2. Lommer broke early in both sets and never looked back, grabbing her fifth dual-match win.
Brown accounted for Michigan's third point of the afternoon, getting a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 5. Brown recovered from an early 2-0 hole in the first set, breaking late for the win. It was all Brown in the second as she raced out to a 4-1 lead and did not look back.
Moments later, Cerdan clinched the win for the Wolverines with a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 4. She went up, 2-0, in the first set and that was all the space she needed to wrap up a 6-3 first-set win. She followed the same script in the second, going up 3-0 en route to the 6-1 win to clinch the match for Michigan.
The remaining three singles matches were abandoned once the team match was decided.
Michigan will complete a two-match home weekend Sunday (March 7), hosting Northwestern at 11 a.m.
