STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year Jackson Ragen scored his team-leading fifth goal, but it was not enough as the University of Michigan men's soccer team fell 4-1 to No. 14-ranked Penn State in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals on Wednesday (April 14) at Jeffrey Field.
Michigan (6-4-1) had the first opportunity of the game, coming just three minutes in, as Austin Swiech lofted a throw-in into the box where Ragen got a head on it for Kevin Buca, who put a quick boot on it.
Four minutes later, Penn State got on the board first with a quick transition goal. Pierre Reedy sent a through ball to Alex Stevenson, who played a feed inside the 18-yard box to Daniel Bloyou for the tally.
The Nittany Lions took a 2-0 lead on a penalty kick, on a play that originally appeared offsides in the 18th minute. Mangione converted on the free chance, which came against the run of play as the Wolverines had momentum on its side. Michigan created excellent scoring chances off two corner kicks, a free kick and a dangerous arching ball from Swiech.
Michigan made it a one-goal game in the 29th minute. The Wolverines took advantage of their fourth corner kick, when Marc Ybarra swung the ball in to the far edge of the six-yard box where Swiech put it on goal before it deflected off Ragen and past Penn State keeper Kris Shakes to cut the lead to 2-1.
Ybarra made an incredible defensive team save in the 54th minute after a Michigan defender lost his footing, creating a 2-on-1 chance. Ybarra tracked back and saved the Tyger Evans shot off the line.
Ybarra also gave the Wolverines one of their best opportunities in the second half when he launched a free kick from 22 yards out to the far post.
In the 63rd minute, Reedy made it 3-1, and Liam Butts added a goal in the 88th minute.
Owen Finnerty made two saves, including a leaping stop to his right in the 77th minute. Shots were even at 12, while Michigan took five more corner kicks, 9-4.
Michigan will learn on Monday (April 19) during the noon NCAA selection show if it is one of 12 at-large teams to make it into the upcoming 36-team NCAA Tournament.
