SEATTLE, Wash. -- Senior left-handed pitcher Meghan Beaubien tossed her second no-hitter in less than seven days as the No. 20-ranked University of Michigan softball team kicked off NCAA Regional play with a 2-0 win against Seattle on Friday evening (May 21) at Washington's Husky Softball Stadium.
Beaubien (16-3) struck out 12 Seattle batters, including six looking, and allowed just three total base runners on a hit-by-pitch in the first inning, a walk in the second and a two-out fielding error in the fifth. Her no-hitter -- the seventh of her career and third this season -- followed a five-inning perfect game in her last start against Rutgers last Saturday (May 15).
Beaubien claimed the pitchers' duel against Seattle's Carley Nance, the WAC Tournament MVP, who held Michigan to six hits and eight total base runners. Beaubien struck out six over the first three innings and two apiece in the fourth, fifth and seventh frames.
Michigan broke through in the bottom of the third inning. Junior left fielder Lexie Blair, who led the Wolverine offense with a 2-for-3 effort, sent a hard, bouncing leadoff single up the middle, advanced on a bunt single and a flyout to the warning track in left-center field and scored on a wild pitch in the dirt and to the backstop.
Senior third baseman Taylor Bump added insurance in the sixth with a one-out solo home run to the outfield bleachers beyond right-center field -- her team-best 11th long ball of the season. Bump has homered in three of the last five games.
The Wolverines advance in the NCAA Regional winners' bracket and will face No. 6-ranked and regional host Washington on Saturday (May 22) at 3Â p.m. PDT at Husky Softball Stadium.
