LEXINGTON, Ky. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team battled until the final point but came up shy in a 4-3 loss to No. 15-ranked Arizona in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday (May 7) at the Boone Tennis Complex.
Michigan took the doubles point easily as the Wolverines looked solid early. Ondrej Styler claimed a win at No. 2 singles early before Arizona won three straight. Mattias Siimar delivered with a third-set win at No. 4, bringing the match to 3-3, as it all came down to No. 1 singles between Andrew Fenty and No. 45 Gustaf Strom.
Fenty held off Strom after dropping the first set 6-3. He won three straight games to take a 6-3 second set. With all eyes on the third set, Strom took an early 3-1 lead, and Fenty was not able to overcome the deficit and fell 6-3 in the third set.
The team of Fenty and Siimar won its third straight match and 10th dual win of the season. They jumped out to a 3-0 lead and never looked back en route to a 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles. It marked the pair's 40th win together, as they improved to 40-7.
Connor Johnston and Nino Ehrenschneider cruised at No. 3 doubles, taking a 5-1 lead before finishing of the Wildcats 6-2. They finshed the season unbeaten as a duo at 5-0.
It was a tight match at No. 2 with Maloney And Styler trailing 4-5 before the match was abandoned.
Michigan added to the lead with Styler winning his 13th singles match of the season and fifth over a ranked opponent. It was a battle in the first set as Styler took a 2-0 lead, then inched ahead 3-1 before Jonas Ziverts battled to get back in the match 5-3. After winning the next point, Styler put him away in the final game for the 6-4 score. The second set was all Styler as he gave up just one game in a 6-1 victory.
Arizona got three straight singles win to take over the lead 3-2. Nick Beaty lost just his third dual match of the season by scores of 6-4, 6-2 at No. 5. He finishes the season with a 19-5 singles mark. Ehrenschneider lost just his second dual match, falling 7-5, 6-1 at No. 6 singles. It was his first loss at No. 6 and he finished 3-1 at the position.
Arizona took the lead as Patrick Maloney lost at No. 3, 6-3, 6-4.
With Fenty and Siimar still on court heading into the third sets, it was a must-win situation for both players.
Siimar never trailed in the third set, wining 6-3 to take his match and his 50th singles win of his Michigan career.
The Wolverines finish their season as Big Ten East Division champion with 15-5 overall and 14-2 conference records.
