Michigan Hosting NCAA Champion UMass Highlights 2021-22 Non-Conference Slate

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan announced the hockey team's non-conference schedule for the 2021-22 season on Thursday (July 29). The Wolverines will play a total of 12 non-conference games, with nine to be played at Yost Ice Arena.
Highlighting the schedule is a Jan. 8-9 series against defending national champion Massachusetts at Yost Ice Arena in what will be the first-ever meeting between the schools.
Michigan opens the season Oct. 8-9, hosting Lake Superior State in a two-game series at Yost. The Maize and Blue holds a 65-49-7 all-time record against the Sault Ste. Marie program and swept the Lakers the last time the teams met in October 2019.
The following weekend, Michigan will take part in the Ice Breaker in Duluth, Minn. It will be a stacked tournament, as the Wolverines will get a chance to take on Minnesota-Duluth, which U-M was set to face off against in the 2021 NCAA Tournament. The teams met every year between 1966-1981, when both were members of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, with Michigan holding a 23-18-1 advantage in the all-time series.
Providence, the 2015 NCAA national champion, and Minnesota State, a 2021 Frozen Four participant, make up the other two teams at the Ice Breaker, with Michigan taking on one of them in game two..
A home-and-home series with Western Michigan is slated for Oct. 22-23, with Yost playing host on Friday (Oct. 22) before the short trip to Kalamazoo on Saturday (Oct. 23). The teams will meet for a third time on Dec. 30 when Michigan co-hosts the Great Lakes Invitational. U-M will host two games in a showcase style format, facing head coach Mel Pearson's former team, Michigan Tech, on Dec. 29. The Wolverines last won the GLI in 2015.
Thanksgiving weekend, Nov. 26-27, Niagara will be in town for a two-game set at Yost. The Wolverines have won the last eight games in the series, but the teams have not faced off since the 2015-16 season.
The Big Ten conference schedule will be announced at a later date.
