ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team came away with a 1-1 double-overtime draw against a competitive Detroit Mercy squad in its season opener Thursday (Aug. 26) at U-M Soccer Stadium.
The Wolverines controlled the ball for much of the match, outshooting the Titans 24-4, putting eight on goal in the contest.
Senior Derick Broche netted U-M's goal in the 38th minute. He ripped a one-touch pass from six yards out off a pass from Bryce Blevins, who was fed the ball from Inaki Rodriguez outside the 18-yard box.
Blevins led the Maize and Blue with five shots, four of which were on goal. Harry Pithers had four shots with one on goal and Uriel Zeitz and Evan Rasmussen each recorded three shots.
Zeitz, Jason Bucknor and Michael Leon all made their Michigan debuts, each earning a start against the Titans.
Detroit Mercy scored first on a long ball down the field and a strike into the upper-left corner of the net before Michigan found its first offensive attack in the ninth minute and continued to find opportunities.
Detroit Mercy was issued a red card in the 21st minute, forcing it to play down a player. U-M took advantage of the man-up opportunity as Rodriguez fed a pass to Blevins, who worked his way past two defenders. He fed a crisp one-timer pass to a breaking Brocheo and he knotted the game at 1 with just under 10 minutes to play in the first half.
Michigan continued to dominate ball possession and headed into the halftime break with a 9-2 shot advantage and tied 1-1.
The Wolverines continued to look for the go-ahead goal as a shot from Marc Ybarra was blocked and Bucknor's shot sailed wide in the 67th minute of the match.
Rasmussen was centimeters away from the game-winning goal in the 82nd minute. He got his head on a cross, but the UDM keeper got his gloves on the ball to keep the game knotted at 1. With neither team finding a shot in the closing eight minutes, the two teams went into overtime.
Through 90 minutes of action, the Maize and Blue outshot Detroit Mercy 18-3 with seven shots on goal. The Wolverines continued to create chances with back-to-back corner kicks in the first overtime period and three straight shots in the second, but were unable to find the golden goal.
U-M will be back in action Sunday (Aug. 29) when it makes a short trip to Oakland for a 2 p.m. contest at Oakland Soccer Field. The match will be streamed live on ESPN+.
