BATON ROUGE, La. -- Sophomore Scottee Johnson led the University of Michigan volleyball team to a sweep of Florida State (25-14, 25-19, 25-16) on Saturday (Aug. 28) at the LSU Tiger Classic in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. The victory over the Seminoles wrapped up a 2-0 weekend to kick off the season.
Johnson set a new career-high in service aces with seven, including six in the first set. The Dayton, Ohio, native also had 31 assists, seven digs and a kill. In total, the Wolverines finished with 12 aces, their most in a match since Oct. 13, 2017, against Rutgers.
The Wolverines hit .333 as a team and held FSU to just .112 thanks in part to eight team blocks.
Senior Paige Jones once again led the Maize and Blue in kills, finishing with a double-double of 12 kills and 10 digs. Junior May Pertofsky was the only other Wolverine to finish in double-digit kills (10), while hitting an eye-popping .769 attack percentage. Freshman Jacque Boney set a new career-high with eight kills and hit .571, while adding four total blocks.
Set one was a back-and-forth battle until Johnson stepped to the service line with a 19-14 lead. The sophomore rattled off six straight points, including four aces, to give U-M a 25-14 victory. The second set followed a similar script, with the teams playing even to 8-8, when Michigan went on a 7-1 run to separate itself and cruise to a 25-19 set win.
The match's final set was a dominant performance on both sides of the net, as the Wolverines hit .333 while holding the Seminoles to .031. Michigan grabbed the lead at the first point and never let it go, winning 25-16 and earning its first sweep of the year.
U-M again received steady contributions from junior Jess Robinson, who had seven kills and two blocks, and Hannah Grant, who led both teams with 18 digs.
The Wolverines will return to action at the Kristen Dickmann Invitational, hosted by the U.S. Naval Academy. U-M opens the invitational Friday (Sept. 3) when it takes on West Virginia at noon, and then will play host Navy at 7 p.m.
