ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The No. 23-ranked University of Michigan volleyball team fell in quick fashion Friday (Sept. 3) to West Virginia, getting swept (25-21, 25-19, 25-18) to kick off the Kristen Dickmann Invitational at the U.S. Naval Academy's Wesley A. Brown Field House.
The Mountaineers limited Michigan to just .119 hitting for the match, while attacking at a .278 clip themselves. Michigan was its own worst enemy throughout the match, committing 17 attacking errors, seven service errors and six reception errors.
Senior Paige Jones was the lone Wolverine to finish the match with double-digit kills, leading all players with 15 while hitting .297.
The match started with a service ace from sophomore Jess Mruzik, but West Virginia controlled the game the rest of the way. The first set saw the squads knotted at 14 with momentum seemingly on the Wolverines' side, but the Mountaineers gained control into the media timeout and never looked back. Michigan was able to cut the deficit to just one at 19-18, but WVU finished the set on a 6-2 run.
After six ties and three lead changes in the first set, set two was all West Virginia from the beginning, scoring the first four points of the match and never allowing Michigan to pull even again. The Mountaineers hit .257 in the set while the Wolverines managed a .162 mark, leading to a 25-19 set final.
Though the third set played closer than the second early on, with six ties and a pair of lead changes, West Virginia thoroughly controlled the second half of the set, scoring seven consecutive points after being tied at 14. WVU took the third set by a 25-18 final.
The Wolverines will return to action tonight, when they take on host Navy at 7 p.m. inside Wesley A. Brown Field House in their finale at the Kristen Dickmann Invitational. The match will be streamed live on ESPN+.
