DEXTER, Mich. -- Paced by a battle up front by All-Americans Katelynne Hart and Ericka VanderLende, the No. 11-ranked University of Michigan women's cross country team flashed its potential in the season-opening Michigan Open on Friday afternoon (Sept. 3).
Hart ultimately edged out VanderLende for the individual victory by less than a second in a sprint down the final straightaway, with the former pulling away late in her home debut to clock 17:11.9 to the latter's 17:12.4 over the the five-kilometer (3.11-mile) Hudson Mills Metropark course.
Right behind them was Kayla Windemuller for third in her home cross country debut, crossing through in 17:19.2.
Multiple-time track and field All-American Alice Hill (17:42.6) finished fourth, followed closely by fifth-place Samantha Saenz (17:44.9).
The field was comprised entirely of in-uniform Michigan runners, though not all of the Wolverine roster that will compete this fall was in action. Others will make their debuts throughout the coming weeks.
Full results for the Wolverines who ran in uniform on Friday are listed below.
