MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- The No. 2-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team earned goals from six different players en route to an 8-0 win at in-state foe Central Michigan on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 5) at Cristy Freese Field. It was the Wolverines' second straight shutout victory.
Senior Sofia Southam and sophomore Erin Reilly netted two goals apiece, while Reilly, sophomore Kate McLaughlin and freshman Abby Tamer all scored the first markers of their collegiate careers. Southam, Tamer and senior Kathryn Peterson, who also scored, made their season debuts today after missing last weekend's weekends while at the Pan American Championship in Chile.
Peterson scored the Wolverines' first and game-winning goal early, at the 4:15 mark, after the ball kicked loose to the top of the circle and she stepped into and rocketed a low shot to the board. Southam followed with her first of two corner goals at 10:28; the initial shot rebounded hard off the CMU goalkeeper's pads and Southam knocked in the rebound from the right post.
McLaughlin and Abby Tamer bracketed the halftime break with their first collegiate goals late in the second quarter and early in the third, respectively. Both took advantage of scrums in front of the Central Michigan (0-3) cage. McLaughlin corralled the ball in the middle of the circle and sent a push shot past the goalie at 25:43, while Tamer knocked in a penalty-corner rebound -- batting the ball out of the air -- at 33:27.
Freshman Alana Richardson stripped the ball off a CMU defender and converted on a one-on-one into the circle at the 42:24 mark -- her second goal of the season -- before Michigan (3-0) tacked on three more in the fourth quarter, including back-to-back direct shots off the penalty corner. Southam scored her second at 48:28, while Reilly buried her corner shot to the board just three minutes later at 51:36. Reilly rounded out Michigan's scoring with her second of the game at 59:30, after junior Bailey Bowman carried the ball into the Chippewa circle on the right baseline, sent a pass across the goalmouth and Reilly finished from the left post.
Michigan outshot the Chippewas 35-1 and outcornered them 13-1. Senior Anna Spieker and sophomore Gillian Dumont played for a half apiece to combine for the shutout -- Dumont earned a save the third quarter -- while Central Michigan goalkeeper Katie Maxim posted 13 saves.
The Wolverines will open up the home portion of their 2021 slate Friday (Sept. 10) when they host Ball State at 7 p.m. at Phyllis Ocker Field. Admission is free to all regular-season home events, and the game will be streamed live on Big Ten Network+.
