ANN ARBOR -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team flexed its muscle with multiple Big Ten-leading performances Saturday (Jan. 15) as the Wolverines decisively claimed the Simmons-Harvey Invitational team title at its home U-M Indoor Track Building.
Miles Brown smashed the school record at 600 meters to take the conference lead, Joshua Zeller posted successive Big Ten leaders in the 60-meter hurdles prelims and finals, Cassidy Henshaw made history in the high jump with a seven-foot performance, and 400-meter specialist Dubem Amene stepped down to the 200 meter and showed his raw speed with a conference leader in that event before anchoring a dramatic win in the meet-finale 4x400 relay in Big Ten-leading fashion.
Those performances were chief among the many efforts that gave the Wolverines 164 points on the day, well ahead of runner-up Michigan State with 117, third-place Indiana with 111 and fourth-place Notre Dame at 45.
Overall, Michigan won titles in eight different events on the 15-event program.
In just his second-ever individual race as a Wolverine, Brown claimed the school record at 600 meters. Trailing entering the final lap, he came from behind over the last 200 meters and crossed the line in 1:16.98, eclipsing the previous school record 1:17.33 posted 21 years ago by Jeremy Schneider.
Brown's effort stands as the No. 3 time in the NCAA and No. 8 in the world for the 2022 indoor season.
Teammate Cole Johnson surged into second in the closing meters to come home in 1:17.98 for the second-fastest time in the conference, a top-10 performance nationally and the No. 3 spot on the all-time Michigan list.
After coming within .02 seconds of the 2021 Big Ten Indoor title in the 60-meter hurdles a year ago, Zeller is establishing himself as the man to beat in 2022. After dropping a conference-leading 7.83 seconds in the preliminaries, he was even quicker in the final at 7.76 for the victory. The time put him at No. 3 in the NCAA based on results entering the day and No. 15 in the world, and inched him closer to two-time Olympian Jeff Porter's school record of 7.64 from 15 years ago.
Job Mayhue completed the 1-2 sweep with an 8.05 sprint in the final.
Amene posted a Big Ten-leading 21.29 seconds at the 200-meter distance -- half the distance of his signature 400-meter race -- to take the Big Ten lead in that event. The performance put him in the top-10 nationally and moved him to No. 4 in school history.
He was not done there, as he ran anchor leg on the 4x400 relay that took the win in a conference-leading 3:11.29, running down Indiana on the strength of a 45-second split and taking the win in the final meter of the race in a photo finish. He took the baton from the crew of Lawrence Gilliam, Brown and Jack Juds.
Headlining the field events was high jump winner Henshaw, who converted on a clutch third-and-final attempt at 2.17m (7 feet, 1.5 inches) to get the win and become just the 10th man in school history to surpass seven feet indoors. Based on performances from around the country entering the day, the mark would put him in the lead among Big Ten athletes and top-five nationally, and it was equal to what ultimately qualified to the 2021 NCAA Indoor Championships.
In the early field events, Michigan got a victory in the long jump from Bera Ajala at 7.05m (23 feet, 1.5 inches) and a 2-3 finish from Eli Winter and Tony Sommers in the weight throw. Winter moved up to No. 8 in school history at 18.68m (61-3.5). Ajala doubled back to get nine points in the triple jump as the only contestant with a 14.88m (48-9.75) leap.
The Wolverines got nine points between fifth- and sixth-place milers Oli Raimond (4:06.20) and Will Landowne (4:06.55) as seven Michigan men ran faster than 4:10, including career-bests for longer-distance specialists Tom Brady (4:07.88), Christian Hubaker (4:08.60), and Devin Meyrer (4:09.54).
Zach Stewart took the win at 3,000 meters later in the race with a furious final 100-meter kick to take it in 8:15.83. The Wolverines narrowly missed out on another win as Henry Johnson clocked 1:51.78 to just miss out on the win in a footrace to the finish by less than a quarter of a second.
Michigan completes a three-meet homestand next Saturday (Jan. 22) with the Michigan Invitational at 11 a.m. before three consecutive weekends on the road at Indiana, Kentucky, Notre Dame and Chicago.
