CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Led by a career performance and top-10 finish from senior Anika Dy, the 28th-ranked University of Michigan women's golf team used an 883 team total today (Tuesday, Oct. 18) to tie for fifth at the Ruth's Chris Invitational at the Governors Club.
With an opening 73 (+1) from graduate student Ashley Lau and four 74s from the other members of the starting five, the Wolverines began with a 295 and were in seventh after 18 holes. Heading back out for the second 18 of the day, Dy's 70 (-2), Lau's 71 (-1) and three 73s helped U-M recorded its second sub-par team total of the fall at 287 (-1) and position the Maize and Blue fifth after 36 holes. Dy's even-par 72 paced a closing 301 as the Wolverines recorded their first top-five finish of the fall, tying with No. 8 Duke and Louisville with 883 total tallies.
"We had a solid week as a team; it was a full team effort that is for sure," said U-M head coach Jan Dowling. "This shows our depth once again. The final day was the toughest with windy and cold conditions. We were able to maintain momentum with some good up and downs, and good decisions. We led the field with pars, and that says a lot about our good decision making and short games."
Dy made the most of returning to the starting lineup as she led the Wolverines with her career-low 216. It marked the first time as a starter that she posted a top-10 finish. She also finished fourth as an individual at EMU's 2019 Shirley Spork Invitational as a freshman.
"This was the first time UNC has hosted an event on this course so it was fun learning a new place, however it also had its challenges at times," said Dy. "Today, the weather really took a turn. It was cold and windy so it was playing a lot tougher during the last round. Overall, I stayed patient and waited for the birdies to come. I hit the ball pretty well throughout and saw some putts drop so that helped make things little easier."
"Anika had a great week and we are super proud of her," added Dowling. "She earned her way back into the lineup and has worked hard on her swing and overall game. It's awesome to see the work pay off and the solid ball striking freed up her whole game."
With her 220 (73-71-76) tally, Lau was able to post a season-best tie for eighth place and record the 15th top-10 finish of her career. Senior Hailey Borja finished just outside the top 25 as she tied for 26th at 223 (74-73-76).
The Wolverines will wrap up their fall season with the finale at the Landfall Tradition, Friday through Sunday (Oct. 28-30). Michigan will make its ninth appearance in UNC Wilmington's annual fall event played at the Country Club of Landfall. Last year, Mikaela Schulz's top 10 finished helped the Wolverines post a runner-up team finish.
