AUSTIN, Texas -- Fifth-year senior Will Lewan of the University of Michigan wrestling team has been selected to participate in the National Wrestling Coaches Association's 54th All-Star Classic. The event, which was last held in 2018, is slated for Sunday, Nov. 22, in Austin, Texas, and will be streamed live on FloWrestling.
The NWCA All-Star Classic pits the nation's top collegiate wrestlers against each other in challenge matches that are often seen as a preview of the NCAA Championships.
Lewan, ranked No. 1 at 157 pounds by FloWrestling, claimed fifth place at the 2022 NCAA Championships, placed second at the Big Ten tournament and posted a 21-7 season record last season. He is scheduled to face Arizona State's Jacori Teemer, who he defeated 4-2 in overtime in the fifth-place match at NCAAs, though his opponent could change.
Lewan is 60-20 over four seasons in maize and blue, a three-time NCAA qualifier and also earned NWCA second team All-America honors as a redshirt freshman after COVID-19 canceled the 2020 NCAA Championships. He is the 41st Michigan wrestler to earn a NWCA All-Star selection and eighth over the last four events.
Michigan, the reigning Big Ten champion, will kick off its 2022-23 season with the annual Michigan State Open on Saturday, Nov. 5, in East Lansing, Mich. The Wolverines will host Columbia for their home opener on Sunday, Nov. 20, at Cliff Keen Arena.
