ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan wrestling head coach Sean Bormet announced Wednesday (Nov. 2) that graduate student Jack Medley, fifth years Will Lewan and Mason Parris and Cameron Amine will serve as team captains for the 2022-23 season.
"We have a lot of exceptional leaders in our program, " said Bormet. "These four men have been tremendous representatives of Michigan wrestling -- on the mat, in the classroom and in the community. They know what it takes to be successful and live it every day. It's a great example to our younger guys. Team 101 belongs to every member of this program, but I'm excited to have these four help set the tone."
Medley is a two-year starter at 125 and 133 pounds and earned NWCA Honorable Mention All-American honors in 2020 after Covid-19 canceled the NCAA Championships. He owns a 70-42 career record and lists No. 16 in the InterMat preseason rankings at 125 pounds.
A two-time All-American at 157 pounds, Lewan enters the season ranked No. 3 at the weight after placing fifth last season at the NCAA Championships and second at Big Tens. He is 60-20 over his four seasons in Maize and Blue and is slated to participate in the NWCA All-Star Classic on Nov. 22.
Parris is a three-time All-American at heavyweight, earning runner-up honors in 2021 and fifth last season at the NCAA Championships in Detroit. Also a two-time Big Ten runner-up, Parris owns a career record of 91-18 over four seasons. He enters the season ranked No. 3 nationally and will be a Michigan team captain for the third consecutive year.
Amine is a two-time All-American at 165 pounds, placing in both appearances at the NCAA Championships with a seventh-place finish as a freshman in 2021 and earning fourth last season in Detroit. He has also twice placed top three at the Big Ten Tournament, earning runner-up honors last season, and enters this year ranked No. 4 at 165 pounds. He owns a 49-16 career record.
All four Wolverines have also earned both Academic All-Big Ten and NWCA All-Academic Team accolades.
U-M will open the 2022-23 season at the annual Michigan State Open this Saturday (Nov. 5) at Jenison Field House in East Lansing, Mich. Action is slated to begin at 9:30 a.m. and will be streamed live on FloWrestling.
