ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 6-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team used bonus points and comebacks to roll in its home opener, earning a 38-6 win over Columbia on Sunday afternoon (Nov. 20) in front of 1,775 fans at Cliff Keen Arena. U-M claimed nine of 10 bouts, earning bonus points in six, to stay unbeaten on the season.
Michigan built up a sizable early lead with five straight wins -- four with bonus -- to take a 22-0 lead into the intermission. Kurt McHenry, who was one of five Wolverines to win in his Keen Arena debut, kicked off the dual with a 15-7 major decision against Nick Babin in the opening bout at 125 pounds. McHenry scored seven takedowns, including a single leg at the final buzzer to secure the bonus point after his point for riding time (1:46).
Dylan Ragusin and Cole Mattin both ended their bouts early at 133 and 141 pounds, respectively. Ragusin, ranked fifth in the latest InterMat poll, cruised to a 22-5 technical fall -- his second in a row -- over Boris Witmer behind six takedowns, a reversal and eight backs points in just 3:36. Mattin, ranked 12th, transitioned a suck back to the stacked half nelson to pin Kai Owen at 1:08 for his second fall this season.
Chance Lamer, ranked 21st at 149 pounds, earned a 12-1 major decision over Richard Fedalen in his Keen Arena debut. Lamer scored three takedowns, including two in the third period, and earned a pair of two-point turns in the first on a claw and an arm bar while accumulating 4:22 in riding time. Will Lewan, ranked third at 157 pounds, scored takedowns in the first and third periods and rode for 1:05 en route to a 6-3 decision over Andy Gar.
Columbia earned a fall at 165 pounds to get on the board before the Wolverines clamed each of the last four bouts, alternating bonus wins with third-period comebacks.
Joseph Walker and Brendin Yatooma produced the comeback wins at 174 and 197 pounds, respectively, and both in their Keen Arena debuts. Walker earned a 5-2 decision against Lennox Wolak, using a second-period rideout to swing momentum before taking the lead on a takedown midway through the third off a sucker drag from a front headlock. Walker rode out the bout, adding a stall and earning 2:29 in riding time.
Yatooma, like Walker, gave up a first-period takedown against Javen Jovero and trailed by one midway through the third period when he initiated a flurry, spun behind to score and rode out the match to earn a 4-3 decision for his first collegiate dual win.
Matt Finesilver, ranked 11th at 184 pounds, earned a 9-1 major decision against Jack Wehmeyer and also won in his Keen debut after joining the Wolverine program last summer. After a scoreless first period, Finesilver scored on a single-leg takedown in the second and, with bonus in mind late, added two more in the third with 2:24 in riding-time advantage.
Mason Parris, ranked third nationally, closed out the dual with a first-period fall against Dan Conley at 2:35 -- his fifth pin this season and second in a row. Parris scored four takedowns to build up a big lead before turning Conley with a half to secure the fall. He improved to 8-0 on the season with seven bonus wins.
Michigan (3-0) will take a week off over the Thanksgiving holiday before returning to action at the annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, slated for Friday and Saturday, Dec. 2-3, at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nev. Action is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. PST each day.
