LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Mason Parris captured the heavyweight title to headline the No. 5-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team's fourth-place finish (96.5 points) at the 40th annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, which concluded Saturday (Dec. 3) at the Las Vegas Convention Center. The Wolverines had six total placewinners and drew scoring performances from all 10 representatives.
The CKLV heavyweight title was the second for Parris, who also won in 2019 in his only previous appearance at the annual event. Ranked third and seeded second in the tournament, Parris defeated Northwestern's sixth-ranked Lucas Davison 6-4 in the championship final. He scored takedowns in the first and third periods, earning the first from neutral danger amid a scramble before giving up a reversal in a continuation of the same scramble and icing the bout with a go behind off a Davison double attempt early in the final frame. Michigan has boasted seven CKLV champions over the last six tournaments.
Parris went 5-0 over the two-day tournament and earned three ranked wins -- two in the top 10. He also defeated Air Force's eighth-ranked Wyatt Hendrickson 12-5 in the morning semifinal round. He scored takedowns in the first and third periods and broke the match open with a four-point cradle in the second. Parris improved to 13-0 on the season.
Will Lewan, seeded first and ranked third at 157 pounds, took fourth place after injury, defaulting out of his medal match against NC State's ninth-ranked Ed Scott in the first period. He finished with a 4-2 record to place at CKLV for the second straight year. Lewan took the first lead in his semifinal bout against Purdue's 11th-ranked Kendall Coleman with a second-period escape and double leg, but Coleman rolled through to reverse the Wolverine to his back and Lewan could not overcome the deficit in a 9-5 loss. He bounced back with a 3-2 decision against South Dakota State's Cael Swenson in the consolation semifinals to move to the third-place bout.
Dylan Ragusin, seeded third and ranked fifth, bounced back in the medal round to earn fifth place after a pair of tough losses to open the day at 133 pounds. He dropped back-to-back matches on third-period takedowns, including a 5-1 decision to Arizona State's fourth-ranked Michael McGee in the quarterfinals with a takedown and two near-fall points out of a late scramble. Ragusin used a late takedown of his own, chasing down a reattack go behind with 12 seconds left, to defeat Virginia Tech's ninth-ranked Sam Latona 3-1 in the fifth-place bout. He went 4-2 to place for the second straight year.
Chance Lamer and Matt Finesilver claimed seventh place at 149 and 184 pounds, respectively, while Kurt McHenry placed eighth at 125 pounds. All three dropped their first wrestleback match of the morning. McHenry was forced to injury default out while leading 2-1 in the first period against Nebraska's Liam Cronin, who went on to take third, while McHenry withdrew from the event with a 4-2 record.
Lamer, ranked 19th and seeded sixth at 149 pounds, rolled to an 18-2 technical fall against Northern Iowa's 14th-ranked Colin Realbuto in the medal match. Lamer scored four takedowns and 10 back points, going feet-to-back three times in the first period before ending the bout with a single leg at the 3:32 mark. Like McHenry, he went 4-2 to place in his CKLV debut.
Finesilver also earned bonus points in the medal round with a forfeit win to place seventh at 184 pounds. He went 4-2 over two days; it was his first time placing in three CKLV appearances -- the first two at 174 pounds while at Duke.
The Wolverines will next compete in the new year when they travel to California for a pair of non-conference duals. U-M will face Cal Poly at 7 p.m. PST on Friday, Jan. 6, in San Luis Obispo before heading to Bakersfield for a noon PST matchup against CSU Bakersfield on Sunday, Jan. 8.
