Maize and Blue Remain Perfect with B1G Win over Northwestern

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 17-ranked University of Michigan women's basketball team used an 8-0 run in the middle stages of the fourth quarter to regain the lead and never trailed again in a 77-66 win over Northwestern on Sunday afternoon (Dec. 4) at Crisler Center. With the win, Michigan has won its first nine games for the second time in program history (2020-21).
In addition, J. Ira and Nicki Harris Family Head Women's Basketball Coach Kim Barnes Arico won her 100th Big Ten contest. She is the 16th head coach in the history of the conference to reach the century mark.
Michigan entered the fourth quarter with a 51-45 lead after Greta Kampschroeder hit a triple on the left wing on Michigan's final possession of the third. Northwestern scored the first six points of the quarter, forcing a Michigan timeout with 8:17 remaining.
The Wolverines turned the ball over out of the stoppage, but Northwestern returned the favor with a shot-clock violation on its ensuing possession. The teams traded free throws to knot the contest at 53 with 6:35 remaining.
The Maize and Blue ripped off an 8-0 run for a 61-53 lead on a jumper from Maddie Nolan to start it. Emily Kiser hit a pair of free throws, with Laila Phelia scoring off a steal and Kiser ending the spurt with a layup from Leigha Brown with 4:39 remaining.
NU countered with six straight of its own in just over 30 seconds to force Michigan to spend a timeout at the 3:49 mark and its lead down to two.
Kiser once again hit a pair at the line and Brown found Nolan for a right-corner triple at the 2:28 mark to push Michigan's lead back to seven, 66-59. U-M's lead grew to as many as 15 in the final minutes en route to the 11-point win.
Brown recorded the first point-assist double-double by a Wolverine since 2016, finishing with 10 points, a career-best 11 assists and five boards. Kiser chipped in 18 points, eight rebounds, three assists, a steal and two blocks in 38 minutes. Phelia also went for 18 points on 7-for-12 shooting with five boards and three steals. Michigan shot 49 percent (25-for-51) from the floor and held a 36-26 advantage on the glass in the contest.
The Wolverines started slow in the first half, trailing by as many as four points in the opening quarter. U-M hit the half with a 28-26 lead despite shooting just 39.3 percent from the floor over the first 20 minutes.
Michigan continues a three-game homestand on Thursday (Dec. 8), hosting Toledo at 7 p.m.
