ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team sent out its seniors in style, cruising to a 24-13 win against in-state rival No. 14-ranked Michigan State on Sunday afternoon (Feb. 13) in front of 1,801 fans at Cliff Keen Arena. The Wolverines claimed seven match wins, including five from seniors in their final home appearance.
Michigan won seven of the first eight bouts and picked up bonus wins at 125 and 174 pounds. Graduate student Nick Suriano, ranked No. 1 nationally at the former, stayed undefeated with a 14-3 major decision against Tristan Lujan at the opening weight. He scored four takedowns, going feet-to-back off a second-period single leg to tack on four near-fall points, and finished with 2:41 in riding-time advantage. He boasts seven bonus wins in eight appearances this season.
Graduate student Logan Massa, ranked fifth at 174 pounds, earned U-M's other bonus win with a dominant 17-1 technical fall over Nathan Jimenez. Massa broke it open over the last minute of the first period, finishing on a single leg then piling on 10 back points off three separate turns, including a four-point turk and a four-point bow and arrow over the last 30 seconds. He added two more takedowns in the second, ending the bout with a go behind at the 4:11 mark. It was his second tech fall of the weekend; he improved to 8-1 on the season.
Graduate student Myles Amine, ranked second at 184 pounds, followed Massa with a wild 8-4 comeback win against 19th-ranked Layne Malczewski. Amine trailed entering the third period after giving up the initial takedown and, after high crotch of his own, a late locked-hands call in the second. He rolled for a quick reversal in the third, splitting the legs to tack on two back points off a turk and rode out the match to earn 2:36 in time advantage. Amine improved to 9-1 on the season.
Michigan (11-1, 6-1 Big Ten) also earned back-to-back wins from graduate students Stevan Micic and Kanen Storr at 141 and 149 pounds, respectively, to send them out winners at Keen Arena. Micic, ranked 17th, earned a 10-3 decision over Matt Santos, scoring four takedowns, including two in the first period, and closed it out with a go behind and rideout in the third to accumulate 1:06 riding-time advantage.
Storr, ranked 22nd, registered a 5-2 decision over Peyton Omania in his first home appearance of the semester since returning from injury. He scored on single-leg takedowns in the first and second periods and ran out of time on another in the third. The Wolverine captain avenged his loss to Omania in last season's dual meeting.
Senior/junior Will Lewan and junior/sophomore Cameron Amine rounded out the Wolverines' winners with decisions before and after the intermission break. Lewan, ranked ninth, used a third-period takedown on a late single leg and scramble to edge 17th-ranked Chase Saldate 3-2 for his second ranked win in three bouts. Amine, ranked 14th, scored on a first-period single leg, added a stall point and rode for 2:06 en route to a 5-1 decision against Caleb Fish.
Michigan will conclude its dual-meet slate on road next Sunday (Feb. 20) when it travels to Mount Pleasant, Mich., for another in-state showdown against Central Michigan. The dual is slated for a 2 p.m. start at McGuirk Arena.
