
Ice Hockey Olympic Updates: Canada, United States Eliminated in Quarterfinals

BEIJING, China -- MGoBlue.com will track the progress of four University of Michigan ice hockey sophomores and two former Wolverines -- all first-time Olympians -- at the 2022 Winter Olympics, with the men's ice hockey competition running Feb. 10-20. U-M sophomores Matty Beniers and Brendan Brisson are joined by Steven Kampfer (2007-10) and Strauss Mann (2019-21) on Team USA, while Canada's roster includes sophomores Kent Johnson and Owen Power. Prior to this year, 16 Wolverines have competed in hockey at the Winter Olympics.
Wednesday, Feb. 16
Team Canada has been eliminated from the Olympics after a 2-0 loss to Sweden in the quarterfinals. Kent Johnson, who led Canada in scoring (1-4--5) during qualifying play, was benched for nearly the entire third period and played just 14 shifts -- while both of Sweden's goals came during that period, at 50:15 and 58:10 (empty net). Team USA was defeated by Slovakia 3-2 in a quarterfinal shootout, ending its time in Beijing. The U.S. was 46 seconds away from the semifinals when Slovakia scored to tie the score at 2 and force overtime, during which neither team scored. Matty Beniers had four chances to win it during the 10-minute 3-on-3 overtime but did not get a chance in the shootout. After not getting a shift during overtime, Brendan Brisson took the first shootout attempt and was stopped by the Slovak netminder. Team USA had a lengthy 5-on-3 power play that it was not able to convert and went 0-for-4 on the power play after entering the game with the best power play in the Olympics at 66.7 percent. Strauss Mann made 34 saves in goal, including four in the overtime session and the first three shots of the five-man shootout. Tuesday, Feb. 15
Team Canada earned a 7-2 win over China in the qualification game. Kent Johnson, Canada's leading scorer, added his fifth point of the Olympics with an assist. Johnson had one shot and was +1 in 12:52. Owen Power lead the Canadians in time on ice once again at 20:33 and had two shots. In other qualification action Tuesday, Slovakia shut out Germany 4-0 to determine Team USA's opponent for its quarterfinal game, scheduled for 11:10 p.m. EST Tuesday (12:10 p.m. Wednesday in China).
Sunday, Feb. 13
Team Canada cruised to a 5-0 win over host nation China in its final preliminary game. Kent Johnson scored a goal and an assist and Owen Power had one assist. It was Johnson that pointed out to officials his team had scored at 2:09 as Ben Street buried a Johnson rebound (watch). Johnson tallied his first goal of the Olympics, Canada's lone goal of the second period, snapping in a goal from the circle as he joined the play (watch). Power collected his first point as Canada took a 5-0 lead. He released a perfectly-placed shot that was redirected by Corban Knight (watch). For the third straight game, Power led his team in time on the ice, playing 20:59, while taking five shots. Johnson finished a +3 with three shots in 14:11. Steven Kampfer scored Team USA's first goal as the Americans defeated Germany 3-2 in the final game of the preliminary round. Going 3-0 in Group A, USA receives a bye to the quarterfinal round on Wednesday (Feb. 16). Kampfer's first goal and third point of the Olympics came on the power play, a rocket from the left point (watch) at 4:26 of the first to make it a 1-1 game. Kampfer finished second on the team in ice time, playing 23:01, and took three shots. Matty Beniers won seven of 11 faceoffs and finished +1 in 18:27. Saturday, Feb. 12
Strauss Mann backstopped Team USA to a 4-2 win over Canada in Group A play. He made 35 saves in his Olympic debut, including seven during a late third-period push when Team USA was down two skaters. Brendan Brisson scored the game-winning goal early in the second period, his second goal in as many games (watch). Steven Kampfer earned his second point in as many games with the secondary assist on USA's first goal. He played 19:40 and finished +1. Matty Beniers put up the most minutes of the American forwards at 22:01 and won four draws. Owen Power continued to put up big minutes, leading Canada with 22:13 of ice time. Kent Johnson led the team in shots on goal with five.

Brendan Brisson scored the first goal for Team USA (watch) as the Americans skated to an 8-0 win over host nation China. All three Michigan skaters factored into the scoring. Brisson's wicked one-timer beat the netminder on the power play. Alternate captain Steven Kampfer had a shot redirected by Sean Farrell to start the third as USA took a 5-0 advantage. A big snipe by Matty Beniers (watch) made it 7-0, going over the right shoulder of the Chinese netminder. Kampfer finished with one assist and was a +3 playing 17:12. Beniers had a goal, won eight draws, was +1 in 18:11 of ice time. Brisson had one goal, took five shots, and was even in 10:46. Canada opened the Olympics with a 5-1 win over Germany. Originally tabbed an alternate but added to the active roster a week ago, Kent Johnson had two assists on the first two goals. He had the primary assist on the first goal as he centered a pass for Alex Grant at 4:43. Five minutes later, Owen Power and Johnson played catch before Ben Street swung the puck around the boards where Johnson and Eric O'Dell battled for it along the half wall to set up Street to make it 2-0. Johnson finished a +1 and played 13:29 of time on 23 shifts. Power led the team in time on ice, playing 19:33 and finishing a +2.
