ARLINGTON, Texas -- The University of Michigan baseball team overcame a slow start Saturday (Feb. 19) following Friday night's late finish, as the Wolverines rallied for an emphatic 10-2 win over Kansas State at the State Farm College Baseball Showdown hosted at Globe Life Field.
Michigan scored three times in the sixth inning and seven times in the seventh after receiving timely pitching performances to win going away.
Orlando Salinas put Kansas State (0-2) on top in the fourth inning when he took an outside fastball to the gap in left-center for an RBI double.
Michigan (1-1) threatened in the fourth and fifth innings but could not push runs across, stranding runners on second and third in both frames.
Jacob Denner (1-0) was impressive in his first outing of the year. The lefty scattered four hits in six innings of work in which he struck out five batters and retired the last eight batters he faced.
Michigan finally broke through in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring three runs. Jimmy Obertop (three hits) started the frame with a hard single to left and came home on a tricky error with two outs as Alex Fedje-Johnson beat a throw to first base to tie things up. Jack Van Remortel then put the Maize and Blue ahead when he rocketed an RBI double to left before scoring one pitch later on another Kansas State error.
KSU rallied in the seventh and scratched for a two-out run as Cole Johnson fisted a bloop single to center to make it a 3-2 game and chase reliever Noah Rennard. Michigan went to veteran lefty Angelo Smith, who did the job, striking out the Big 12's active home run leader Dylan Phillips to maintain the lead.
The offense responded in the bottom of the frame as Michigan loaded the bases with one out and pushed a run across thanks to a balk by Wikdcat freshman closer Tyson Neighbors. Joe Stewart then delivered a blow as he drove a first pitch fastball to left field for a two-run single and a 6-2 lead. Fedje-Johnson followed with an RBI double to break the game open and the eighth Michigan run came home on a fielder's choice. Several batters later, Clark Elliott launched a massive two-run homer to right field as Michigan put away any doubt as to the outcome.
Obertop led all players with three hits, while Elliott had two more after Friday's three-hit effort. Chase Allen struck out two batters in a scoreless inning of relief work.
Michigan returns to action in the State Farm College Baseball Showcase on Sunday evening (Feb. 20) with a 6:30 p.m. CST start against Oklahoma at Globe Lufe Field.
