DETROIT, Mich. -- Seven University of Michigan wrestlers advanced into the quarterfinal round at the 2022 NCAA Championships on Thursday (March 17) in front of a crowd of 17,433 at Little Caesars Arena. The Wolverines have two additional wrestlers alive in the consolation bracket and sit in fourth place (21 points) after the first day of competition.
Graduate student Nick Suriano, sophomore/freshman Dylan Ragusin, senior/junior Will Lewan, junior/sophomore Cameron Amine, graduate student Logan Massa, graduate student Myles Amine and senior Mason Parris all registered perfect first-day records to advance to the quarterfinals and combined for a 14-0 tally with five bonus wins. In all, Michigan posted an impressive 16-2 record on the day.
Suriano, the top seed at 125 pounds, earned bonus in his first match before an 8-3 decision over Lock Haven's 17th-seeded Anthony Noto in the second round. He scored three takedowns -- one per period -- and accumulated 1:13 in riding-time advantage. Suriano, a 2019 NCAA champion and two-time finalist at Rutgers, rolled to a 16-3 major decision over Stanford's Logan Ashton in the morning round with six takedowns -- two per period -- and 3:49 in riding time. He improved to 13-0 on the season.
Ragusin, seeded sixth at 133 pounds, earned a pair of decision wins, including a tight 4-2 second-round win over Oregon State's 11th-seeded Devan Turner with a first-period counter takedown and 1:05 riding time. He also picked up an 8-5 win over Lehigh's Malyke Hines in the morning round, striking quickly on a double leg before adding another quick throw-by in the second, earning a stall point in the third, and accumulating a 1:31 edge in riding time.
Lewan, seeded eighth at 157 pounds, used overtime dramatics to secure both of his first-day wins, including a 3-1 decision over Iowa's 11th-seeded Kaleb Young in the second round on a single-leg takedown with just seven seconds remaining in the sudden-victory frame. Lewan's first-round bout was doubly dramatic; he scored an escape just one second after a late restart in the tiebreaker to even riding time and force a second sudden-victory period, then initiated a wild scramble to score the winning takedown with one second remaining on the clock.
Cameron Amine, seeded sixth at 165 pounds, also used a clutch takedown late to claim the season rubber match against Nebraska's Bubba Wilson, 3-1, in his first-round bout, shooting a single leg and winning the ensuing scramble on the edge with 17 seconds left in the third. Amine edged Northern Illinois' 11th-seeded Izzak Olejnik, 4-2, in the evening round, scoring on a second-period takedown and earning 1:08 in riding-time advantage while fighting off a deep leg attack over the final 10 seconds of the third.
Massa, seeded third at 174 pounds, earned bonus points in both of his day-one wins. He rolled to a 15-5 major decision over Appalachian State's Thomas Flitz in the second round with six takedowns -- two per period -- and 2:49 in riding-time advantage. He also defeated Binghamton's Jacob Nolan in the first round behind four takedowns and 3:12 of riding time. Massa is a two-time NCAA All-American and took fifth place at 174 pounds last season.
Myles Amine, the top seed at 184 pounds, cruised to an 18-3 technical fall over Kent State's Colin McCracken with five takedowns, a four-point leg turk in the third and riding-time advantage. He built up 4:09 of riding time in his 5-1 win over Oklahoma State's 16th-seeded Dakota Geer in the evening round after scoring on a low single in the first and a reversal in the third. Already a four-time NCAA All-American, Amine is in a position to become the first five-time placer in NCAA wrestling history.
Parris, seeded seventh at heavyweight, also earned bonus in his first-round match with seven takedowns en route to a 17-5 major decision over Penn's Benjamin Goldin. He defeated Virginia Tech's 10th-seeded Nathan Traxler, 7-3, in the second round with a two first-period takedowns, a reversal in the second and 2:30 in riding-time advantage. Mason was the NCAA runner-up last season.
Michigan also has graduate students Stevan Micic and Patrick Brucki alive in the wrestlebacks at 141 and 197 pounds, respectively. Micic, seeded 24th, dropped his first-round match -- on a pair of counter takedowns -- but bounced back with a 7-4 decision over Oklahoma State's Carter Young in the evening consolation round. Micic rallied from an initial deficit in the bout, scoring on a duck-under with a minute left in the first before adding another takedown in the second and accumulating 1:25 in riding-time advantage.
Brucki, seeded fourth, dropped his second-round match, 6-3, to Oklahoma's 13th-seeded Jacob Woodley -- his second loss this season to the Sooner wrestler -- after giving up takedowns early in the first and late in the third to ice it. He earned an 8-3 decision over Cleveland State's Benjamin Smith in his first bout with takedowns in each period and 2:22 in riding time.
Michigan will resume competition at the NCAA Championships on Friday (March 18) at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Mich. The morning session will begin at 11 a.m. and will feature quarterfinal matches and continued wrestleback competition live on ESPNU.
