SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- With three Wolverines finishing among the top 20, the University of Michigan men's golf team rallied on Sunday (March 6) to post a 284 (-4) final-round total that gave the Wolverines an 877 tally and a three-way tie for the team title at the Desert Mountain Collegiate played on the Outlaw Course. U-M shared the top spot with UAB and Little Rock.
Freshman Hunter Thomson paced the Maize and Blue, tying his career best with his runner-up finish. He finished with a 215 (-1) total -- his fourth sub-par 54-hole total in seven events. His closing 70 (-2), along with senior Patrick Sullivan's 69 (-3), helped the Wolverines produce the second-lowest team tally of the event with a 284 (-4) and climb from seventh place after 36 holes to a share of the team title.
The Desert Mountain Collegiate title is the second for the Wolverines after they claimed the crown in 2017. U-M adds three runner-up title (2015, '16, '18) in the seven times it has hosted the annual spring break event.
After Thomson's runner-up finish, graduate student Brendan O'Reilly capped off the spring break trip with his tie for 11th at 218 (71-75-72), while sophomore Will Anderson tied for 20th at 222 (69-76-77).Â
With two five-Wolverine squads competing in the event, freshman Bavake Sihota led the 'B' team, tying for 46th with his 228 (70-81-77). Junior Pier Francesco De Col played in his third event this season and tied for 68th (76-79-77).
The Wolverines will not take long to return to competition as they head to Lafayette, La., in just over a week (March 14-15) for the Louisiana Classics. The two-day, 54-hole event will be played at Oakbourne Country Club. Last year, U-M posted a 12th-place finish at Louisiana Lafayette's home event.
