ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan field hockey team will boast four representatives at the FIH Junior World Cup next month in South Africa. Freshman Abby Tamer and senior Kathryn Peterson were named to the U.S. Field Junior Women's National Team roster last Friday (March 4), while freshman Caylie McMahon was named a reserve. Sophomore Pilar Oliveros was also selected to the Uruguayan Junior National Team.
Uruguay and the United States both qualified for the Junior World Cup after winning silver and bronze, respectively, at the Junior Pan American Championship last August. After being rescheduled for COVID-related reasons in December, the Junior World Cup is now set to take place at North-West University in Potchefstroom, South Africa, from April 1-12.
Tamer and Peterson, both returning members of the Junior USWNT who competed in the Junior Pan American event, were selected to travel and compete in South Africa. McMahon was also named to the roster as a reserve and is making her Junior USWNT debut after being selected for the U21 team for the first time in February. Prior to their departure on March 26, the Junior USWNT will have another training camp at Queens University in Charlotte, North Carolina, on March 18-20.
Team USA will compete in Pool A and kick off Junior World Cup play on April 1 against The Netherlands, before facing Zimbabwe on April 2 and Canada on April 4 in pool play.
Uruguay will compete in the Junior World Cup for the first time. It will compete in Pool C and face Korea on April 1 before taking on reigning JWC champion Argentina on April 5.
The quarterfinals are scheduled for April 8, the semifinals for April 10, while the Junior World Cup championship game is scheduled for April 12. All Junior World Cup games will be available to watch live at Watch.Hockey.
Tamer, Peterson, McMahon and Oliveros bring Michigan's total number of Junior World Cup participants to 12. They will be the first to compete at the biennial event since Ainsley McCallister helped Team USA to a seventh-place finish at the 2013 event.
